Hey everyone,

I guess I'm not allowed to bump this thread anymore because all of my posts were merged. Hopefully this one doesn't get merged as well because you all might not see this. Respond if you like my development and I'll keep updating you here.

Anyways, the last few days have been dedicated to NPCs. On Saturday, I worked on getting NPCs spawning in the world. There's a lot that goes into making NPCs spawn. You have to make them load to the server, spawn on the map, and add and remove themselves from the player's screen as the player moves around the map. It's all pretty boring, but my current server design made it so much easier to program. Here's a picture of them working!

Yesterday, I had some extra time to work on a couple of things. Primarily, I worked making non-playable characters speak. I decided that the best way to do that would be to implement an IronPython scripting engine. Luckily, I had an old implementation already (which I took and redesigned to be a base for multiple feature implementations I'm planning). After programming the packet structures for NPC actions and developing the handlers for processing NPC interaction requests, I tested it and it fully worked the first time. It's really unusual that it works the first time, but I'm glad it did. Here's a picture of it working:

None of my NPCs say "Potato" btw, I just put that there because I don't feel comfortable releasing any of my NPC dialog yet. I'm putting a lot of time and thought into rewriting them all.

I also implemented weather and the previous login alert window. Today, I'll be implementing my first secret feature. More development is coming soon (if you want me to continue updating here - if so, reply below with feedback).

Cheers,
Spirited Fang

Let me reply to you with another quote taken straight from our Board Rules

You had 4 posts in a row, therefore they got merged. If you keep doing that, I'll merge the previous posts and keep the last one separated, else it will be violating our rules.

And as you can see, it is not that you are not allowed "now" to do this, technically, you have never been allowed to.

The posts were weeks apart. Members in this section have always been allowed to double post if the posts were more than 24 hours apart. You're correct, I don't see that in the rules; however, that makes these development threads and posting updates very difficult to do. Please consider changing your approach.

No section can have a rule that oversees the overall Board Rules and CO2 won't be an exception to this. As I stated, if you post more than 2 times in a row, I'll merge them to the first one of the succession and leave apart the last one so that users will know that there is a new post on the thread, but nothing else.

While you're correct that it's an overarching rule, development and update threads have been left exempt from it through most of this section's history.

It's in your hands now so the decision remains with you and the forum staff but it's always sort of been a given that posting updates on a project is not considered bumping as long as legitimate content is added (draws attention to a recently updated development thread).

Not my intention to step on toes, it's just the route that myself and the previous moderators generally took as it reduced the number of duplicate threads and allowed community development to thrive on the site.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to update you on a few things relating to my schedule. I just returned to classes, so I will not be working on Kibou (Burning Skies) as much as I did at the beginning of the new year. I'm working on some pretty big systems in Kibou which might take a while to fully implement (such as items), so please bare with me. I'm taking a lot of Java classes this semester for UCI, so hopefully I'll have some time to start a small side project in Java (though that's probably not going to happen until Summer or some time in the middle of the semester).

I also have two new commitments that I have to tend to and would like to tell you about. One of them being that I now have a paid internship as a lab aide at my college, and the other one being that Kibou actually got me a job as a software engineer. I'll explain that in a second, but first: for all the drips that told me Kibou would never do anything for me and that I could never teach myself programming, let that sink in. Hahahahaha.. Sorry to everyone else, I'm not bragging - but I want you to know how possible it is. I was demonstrating Kibou in my C# class, and it turns out that one of the students worked at a company in my local area. He told the company about me, and they badly wanted to hire me. So now... I work on C# applications for banks and loan servicing companies, and share an office with the lead software engineer of the company. It's amazing because I started here... in this community, so thank you elitepvpers for all that you've done. I've come so far in my life because of all of this... and I hope I'll be able to repay the community in some way soon.

And I guess that's it for now. I start work this Tuesday, and I'll be fully introduced to my new professors by the end of tomorrow. As far as items go, I have the packet, type definitions, and additional attribute definitions programmed into the server. What's left are the database methods, item class (that manages the item object), the inventory class, and the item usage handler. As usual, more development is on its way!

Cheers,
Spirited Fang

Lets see...

Coding private servers and projects on this forum helped me revise my education and life plans, bolstered my resume, got me a (well paying) internship at a software development company through which I was able to meet with fairly influential members of the IBM research labs, tour/inspect massive data centers as well as attend corporate level software sales meetings.

For Fang it's gotten him plenty of experience for his real world education as well as multiple jobs and future opportunities.

So yes... I'd say that actually having a 'finished' server is the least of the concerns of these types of threads.

I'd MUCH rather hear about the progress on these type of projects and how they influenced someone's life than play a private server for some rather ****** old game.

Just sayin'

I'm glad I took the time to learn programming and redesign my server. It's taken a lot of time (as you've stated multiple times before), but it's without a doubt been well worth it. It's because of the new, final design that I was noticed. It makes use of inheritance and abstraction to increase the modularity of the server.
Quote:
Modularity refers to a logical partitioning of the "software design" that allows complex software to be manageable for the purpose of implementation and maintenance.
The design took a lot of time to plan out, and that's because it's based around a concept called extendability. That was my goal, to make a server with a lot of extendability, and I feel I've accomplished that.
Quote:
In software engineering, extensibility (not to be confused with forward compatibility) is a system design principle where the implementation takes into consideration future growth. It is a systemic measure of the ability to extend a system and the level of effort required to implement the extension. Extensions can be through the addition of new functionality or through modification of existing functionality. The central theme is to provide for change – typically enhancements – while minimizing impact to existing system functions.
I said from the very beginning that this server was for my education. Absolutely nothing has changed since then, and constantly posting the same drama and negativity isn't going to stop this development. A private server will come out, but I'm going to take my time and continue to use it at my advantage. Unlike you, I stuck to something and kept at it. You've constantly said that I'm wasting my time here... but now I've made my break into the software engineering industry, without a degree, just because of Conquer Online and this section. I've never given up on this project, and it's given me life experiences that I'll never forget. Cheers.

Everybody, let us take a minute for the accomplishments of a fellow CO server developer.

Not all of us end up that lucky, but it definitely feels good when you see the person who got you where you are in programming, and also your friend end up in the position he's in, simply by enduring all the drama of a forum, and doing what he felt he needed to do the entire time.

Good luck, Fang.

I wouldn't typically consider coding Conquer as a life experience, butttt whatever floats your boat homie. Try *** instead, it's great. Trust me

***, parties, etc are all rather minor when you actually think about life experience.

Jobs, large projects and education are far, far more influential in really determining what you're capable and how you develop as a person... aka the experiences of your life.

Pretty hard to get a job from having *** unless you're looking to ***** yourself out.

You can't compare the social aspects of life to the business aspects of life. I know you're defending Fang, but you're arguing based on an opinion on what the best lifestyle is... That being said, I consider them equally important.

Of course the other guy is clearly trollin', so that kind of negates any chance of you having a logical, rational discussion along with both sides being complete opinions, so whatever.

My argument is more based around stages of life and maturity actually (and yes, I'm aware no point really arguing with a troll, simply wanted to state my opinion).

Childhood and adolescence is when most people spend their time worrying about and improving their interpersonal skills and social aspects of their lives. At some point though we need to focus on improving the fundamentals of what we plan to do with our life and the skills that will be required to succeed in the long term.

Yes, social skills are very, very important and are not something anyone should ignore but I also feel that giving them a heightened importance in a programming and career discussion is... rather silly.

We all have to decide what is important to us. We have no true idea what else Fang does in his life as this thread is dedicated to his programming education and career at which he seems to be succeeding incredibly well. Bringing up a completely unrelated aspect of his life is both disrespectful and a complete derailment of the thread.
