I agree on this but it's not totally because of that, it is mostly the guides that were made to run the files, back in the day not much servers came out even when the files got public, the moment people started posting guides and sql queries is when it escalated, EVERYONE can now make a server aside from the exploits. That is what totally messed up the scene even more.

marketing your server ain't that cheap.
Most of pserver owners are just running it for an extra income since they think it's an easy money. They don't care about the server/players they don't care if the players are going down or up.
Community is divided among the 50~100 players servers.
Most of the professional teams are just lacking or they lost hope, some of them are just trying to show HOW PRO THEY ARE!.
Also one guy said it all, most of the players are following the "Herd behavior" since some of the players pretty dickheads, they think that staff members are helping another guild because they lost Fortress War or because a player in there guild got banned due to abusing the rules.
Anyway that's how most of the humans are.

Marketing is key but it is indeed not cheap however it can be done for free like the epvp thread, if that has a nice structure and good usage of words players will be willing to join, then when the server starts making some income the owners could look into advertising outside of the box like buying ad banners, sending mass emails and advertise through social media.
If your server delivers you shouldnt worry too much about the next steps because players will continue the advertisement for you, telling their friends, spamming other servers and much more.
The current sro scene is filled with greed and you will not succeed unless you fight for it... well isn't it always like that in life? Fight for succes / work hard for your succes. That is the lack of the community; HARD WORK.

the pro teams are not lost hope, but as u see Skalidor from first secound it became on every single hacker or attacker or whatever attacked it, so they have a real fight with them
i think the only way to bring sro alive again that 2~3 pro teams stick togather and creat 1 huge server but as usual they will **** each other because of MONEY.

He doesn't have a 100 cap server and if you mean NecroSRO, that server is everything but corrupt.
That is actually a good example on how to keep a server alive for over 2 years.

Ehm I ran a lot of ****** servers in this scene all of them were long lasting and most populated servers at there time.
If you have a solid prove that I had a single corruption issue please let me see that otherwise you are just assuming bullshits.

From my point of view , this is why silkroad in general (including isro) is fail:
1.No competitive scene (some examples: arenas in wow / LCS in league / and so on , starcraft 2) | read 2.|
2.Silkroad is meant to be PVE focused (best example is isro , griding 4 years just to get raped at pvp by a donor with full gear)
3.No matter how hard you try to balance things (chn increase damage , eu damage reduced) it won't be successful.
4.Donors always have an edge over others (yes I know , donors keep the server alive , but you can actually sell everything that's not affecting your base stats)
5.Community (the majority is under 18 , no doubt , and let's just face it , you always find a group of 8 people in front of samarkand fully buffed waiting for you to step out of safe zone since nobody punishes that)
6.You can't make everyone happy (sombody might like pve , or pvp or even rebord system , no matter how hard you try this is impossible to do)
I think this is why most people stopped playing this game, and those are a few arguments , I can stay here all day long and tell you why silkroad as a game being is failing.

5) That's Silkroad. This has happened since 2007 on iSRO. It's normal.
6) You shouldn't need to make everyone happy. Some people play 100000k free silk servers, some play 0 free silk servers. Everybody has their own invidual choice.

Oh hai.
You want to know what destroyed silkroad community and turned it into the **** hole it is today?
Answer: Bots.
Bots have slowly but surely sucked the life out of SRO, and it's players. Remember back in the day, when the first botters started to appear, and were ostracized from the community?
That doesn't happen anymore. Over the years people became dependent on a program to play a game for them. Their need to be the highest level, or have the strongest set/weapon began to outweigh their need to actually enjoy the game.
With that in mind, Is anyone really surprised with the current state of the game? When you corrupt the core of an apple, it'll start to decay from the inside-out until it rots away into oblivion.
I may very well be the last person still playing who has never botted on any server.
Why?
Because I refuse to help destroy the game I love.
Now if only more people shared that sentiment, perhaps we could salvage this sinking ship. But alas, I fear it is far too late to save this game.
And that makes me sad.

I pretty much fully agree with you here. People relying on mBot to make their profits with elixirs and tablets, relying on sBot to do their alchemy for them, relying on mBot to have sneak peek at people sets, literally people rely on bots to do everything and it's more than likely if not certain ruined the game. Hence why Venture(this is my opinion, no offense) had a bad run, since they disallowed botting.

True.. Thats the reason why my server is legit. More pservers should do it to take a stand against botting. Of course your players will decrease but the gameplay will be much better and the old feeling will come back

[Discussion] About what kind of servers succes and what kind of servers fail
07/13/2012 - SRO Private Server - 40 Replies
Yo guys, of course we all know after chernobyl released the vsro files, tons of servers were created, 90% of them failed and only 10% of them succeeded , its an open discussion about how to have a successful server, in ma opinion, the better management, the better the server is. For example, OverLimits sro got the most awesome things ever, a real job-based server with an anti-abuse system (dunn wanna talk anymore about it so it doesn't turn into an ad.) PlaySRO got nothing special at all, they...

PSRO Stall Network for SWSRO and PSRO servers
08/10/2010 - SRO Private Server - 13 Replies
Hi Guys!
I'm working of a web-based stall network for PSRO server. My goal is to lessen the spam in Hotan and lessen all the typing's and use spam-bots. This project is inspired by this post thanks to melkorz123 for the idea. The difference of this web-based stall network is it has SWSRO support and maybe I'll add all working PSRO server in the near future. This project is 100% free because i used my own paid hosting and domain i just added a sub-domain for this project. This is not yet...

[Fail Thread] TQ Vs. Private Servers
04/08/2010 - CO2 Private Server - 44 Replies
Hey Everyone!
I know this is a bit random...
but it's still on topic.
The reason I made this thread:
1. TQ and Private Servers are always competing.
2. Just for a little laugh. If you're feeling down or just want a laugh then I thought this might be helpful.
Here are the rules:
1. Don't flame.
