Which versions are problem free none.
The sources offered here are there to help start a server.
But they are all bugs & are there for the developer who has a minimum of knowledge not designed for a person who knows nothing about development.

Required knowledge to create a server are the following:
1. Know the .lua language (required).
2. Knowledge of the myssql "sqlserver" language .
3. Know a minimum of smp queries.

If you don't know any of the above 3 points good luck.
Because you will have to debug in lua , in the myssql tables of sqlserver.
And you will also have some smp to debug. ^^

On the other hand if you know the 3 points here are the spices for ease:
Epic 9.1 (easy + lots of software to help you).
Epic 8.1 (Easy because some software but less software than 9.1) .
Epic 7.4 (moderately easy because little software & less features) .

I don't recommend :
9.4 - 9.5 - 9.6 because you will have to create some functions yourself to extract the items.
The 9.6.2 is the most discouraged because no item creation software & you'll have to do everything by hand & there are many bugs to fix I've fixed 44 bugs & I have 10% debug xD

Make sure 'sa' has the proper permissions for the database and that the password is correct.

Check if enabled Named pipe and TCP/ip and changed TCP Dynamics to 1433
if all was correct then check your password in OPT and make sure there in no EOP in the folder or make sure it updated after last modification to OPT
you can post you OPT configration maybe something is wrong with it, if you don't like to share the file you are more than welcome to take a look at mine and compare them

What server version?

If 9.5 that is the wrong password hasher you are using.

you guys are using md5 hash password possibly password2hash tool that tool is for hashed password inside database not the database password itself
use this tool to generate hashed password
