Yes you can.
DL Xpadder and you can map the buttons anyway you wish.
I am using a controller that the game does not recognize, but does now

Oh, screw xpadder. What's the point of mapping keyboard buttons into your analog stick directions if you're going to basically lose the effect of slightly moving that analog stick?

Huh?
Xpadder has advanced setting to adjust the buttons/joysticks so they actually work like the real thing.
You can not even get that with the keyboard.
You press left or right on a keyboard, the wheels go all the way, on my setup, the less I move the stick, the less is steers.
Basically just like a steering wheel.

It does not work with all the controllers. Xpadder will only allow me to assign keyboard left/right and up/down to my analog sticks. Moving my analog stick just slightly will either show no effect or will just recognize it as a "keyboard button tap", which is useless since I would just sit and use my keyboard and avoid the hassle.
EDIT: I'm here talking about gamepads and wheels that are 100% not recognized or detectable in a game, so there is no way for you to toggle the analog sticks on/off. The only way would be replacing a mere keyboard button with a whole analog stick functionality (xpadder is not magic, if you tell it to replace a button with an analog stick, the analog stick will still behave like a button, I tried it). Since it would give you no bonus, it's a useless option.

Your sticks are prob not 8 way.
Mine are, but I see no reason to even need diagonal for racing.
Have you tried clicking that little wrench icon that is at the bottom of the sticks and playing with all the various settings?
But never the less, even if it still behaves like a button to you, the bonus is you don't have to sit right up to the keyboard.
Plus, as you can see how mine is set up, all the driving controls are in very convenient places.
I can be on the gas or brake while steering, and clicking powerups or looking back, does not take any effort at all.
Even clicking record (F12) is right there, no stretching a bit
I don't even have to be close to my laptop and I also have it hooked to wide screen via HDMI that is sitting on a stand to the in front of/to the right of my couch.
So, I can relax back and play games, and not be all hunched up to the laptop.
I also have a mouse sitting on the end stand to click things when needed.
I usually just close the laptop and push it over to the side and out of the way.
TLDR:
I can sit back, put my feet up, relax and race, reach for my beer, smoke one, and have a good oh time.
That alone make the controller a huge bonus.
Plus, the buttons are all in very convenient places.
To each his own though, he asked about how to use a controller and I told him how, there is no real need to be arguing over it, if you wish to not use one then don't, no one said you had to.

You seek comfort in your gaming. I don't find it necessary.
