firstly yes, much of the site is unfinished, all i did was the landing page, the rest (in my mock up) were done with onClick alert msg windows for information, those are not in place, im assuming because ulti will want some pages. I code HTMl, and use CSS. What does happen tho when i use slices is the area for information is limited to cell size, tho this can be worked around with scrolling windows for text etc. technically we all know my forte is japanese design, this was me branching out, and its a bummer that it didnt work out. But it is using jscript for alot on the page from the buttons swap states, to the picture slider. All the pages i work on i try to make artisitic statements on, this one was a miss apparently. No biggy. But html alone cannot do what i design for artistically, the site must use slices from PS. Check my mock up URL and let me know if the same issue occur please, or if it is host connected.

PS i do appreciate criticism, lets try to keep it constructive so things change for the better ^^

Dan, hop on FB and send me the PSD and I'll return with a properly sliced and coded front-end site (html, css, JS). The loading time could be reduced a whole lot.

I'm working on the HTML/CSS now, although as you all can see the designing has no logic behind it (for example check the right navigation, where hover changes the color AND give text a glow, this is nothing you can achieve other than by swapping images, which is not the correct way to go, especially big images).

The subpage background image can't strech without loosing focus, so subpages can only be so big.

css is the kind of thing that you love and also hate. it is however a must have in today`s websites.

i see nothing special about that navigation menu. not even sure it needs jquery, i believe css should do it just fine.
And working with images? GEEZAS MAN, NO!

HTML Code:
<html>
<head>
<style>
ul
{
float:left;
width:100%;
padding:0;
margin:0;
list-style-type:none;
}
a
{
float:left;
width:6em;
text-decoration:none;
color:white;
background-color:purple;
padding:0.2em 0.6em;
border-right:1px solid white;
}
a:hover {background-color:#ff3300;}
li {display:inline;}
</style>
</head>

<body>
<ul>
<li><a href="#">Link one</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Link two</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Link three</a></li>
<li><a href="#">Link four</a></li>
</ul>

Folks, the major thing to remember is "Im an artist" - you cant make unique buttons in HTML or css, that cant be made by other folks. If all people want is a template job, thats fine, there are hundreds of them on just one site alone. If you want something unique, it costs a bit more overhead (performance wise). If you strip all the custom buttons etc what are you left with? A page that looks just like everyone else. At 7 seconds load time for my page, is it REALLY that bad?? At least it doesnt look like ANY other page out there, and as far as i am concerned that is the most important thing...branding. Am i wrong? I am using css by the way, and jquery for the slider, so it isnt as if this page is absent of thse things. Honestly a 7 second load time warrants this much of an issue? Again, check the dev link, as i think a few issues are host related.

The Conquer official page load time is 5.50 seconds, arent we splitting hairs over the use of images? I'll take a good look at what emme shows me and try to optimize it further, but i cant help but think the 1 second we're targeting to shave cant be the real issue here. The header image can be decreased in size easily enough, allowing for quicker access to content, and the flash header is gone on the dev page now, not only speeding things up, but that removes the popup (which was coming from the free host for the flash file).

By the way, it takes 15.18 second for pingdom to load just this page of the thread lol. We're WELL under that.

Silent Death, do you even know what you're talking about? Of course CSS is needed, duh.

And the right navigation (where it says Register, Download, Chatbox), you need to replace the entire image on hover, whereas what you would want to do is just modify it, but since theres text glow etc thats not possible.

Edit:

Dan, I'll be done with the site in a couple of hours, you'll see a big difference when it comes to loading time.

ok well let's not take conquer's webpage as a standard now..

images + great look + speed can be achieved if you code it right ..

coders (especially) should lose this "fk it, it works this way too" mentality.

I'll check the link Silent-Death, ty ty ^^

PS - Completely unfair, it uses images from the hobbit, = instant win XD

Its very nice, very stylish and contemporary. Id love to see the work on this page. Unfortunately im not a coder, so my approach is always thru the artists workflow. I completely understand the need for speed and the team yakuza site itself, after many revs, is at 4 seconds, which isnt too bad i think. But yes, your example is gorgeous.

anyway, no one that makes a co server really gives a flying fuck about the site. They all use the same crappy template with the same crappy chat and the same buttons made so that people on the moon can see them.

I dun really get it.. if you are able to code a server in c#, you can fucking get your hands dirty with some html/css/jq/php and get a decent looking/loading site over night.

.. yeah

oh and btw.. guess which one is acid co and which one is RED:

i think i`ve been blunt in a constructive manner. My statement was that all co sites look the same, and yours is no different.

What you need to do is take it from scratch, make a decent looking site without tables (div mo'fo), structure it so that you can later append **** to it without having to modify a zillion files, don`t overload with pictures, and play with the colors nicely.

Functionality-wise it`s rather simple.. links should work, menu should be accessible yet not in your face, few databases to pull out the tops and whatnot and that`s it.

security-wise with php it`s hard to fail.

Here's a pic of the matching GUI.

@Silent death - i tend to stay away from Div because they tend to move from browser to browser. by using tables the site renders uniform across the main three with no issues for me. Is that not the case anymore? I've not used Div layers much for a while, (other than for floating widgets like corner clicks - static stuff). I could easily wipe the page blank and lay everything as div, working with layers is far more native to me (as in PS, and the technique for modifying myspace pages back when they would let us do that) than the table technique i had to learn by exporting the slices from PS. Yes, you have been very constructive, you and emme both, i think Ulti had other folks in mind. Not liking the design is fine, but you will never make everyone happy. Such is the nature of art. Boring sites bore me, and many other artists who like a touch of flair with our inet, after all bandwidth is forever increasing, while ofc still maintaining as fast a load time as acceptable for a given project's goal.

edit, top one is acid ofc ^^, did you make the red site? I often cruise around for sites to learn from. I'll be looking over the source for that shortly. Thanks again.

oh not sure if its clear, but i made the site (which is only the landing page atm), not ulti or dread.
