I'll answer once for all. i'm the one who flooded 2 weeks ago CO oficial. i can prove. As DDOS flooder, from my expenrience are 2 ways to stop flood.
1. hide your ip(exist some whost when u dns them they dont give ip, but u can connect on them)
2. filter your ip (provider/networks admin can filter your ip port, flood come on one port for exemple port 53/80/115/443...etc, or can come on random port flooder setup port 0 (it come more packs on diferit ports).
u cant stop alone flood even if u use windows or unix. provider network admin can do it, but u may cant use some ports, internet will go slower.
depend who flood u, what way he do it, how he do it, what kind of flood he use and what power he have. if he have over 50MB/s upload on linux server (one or more servers) and he use juno (juno send death packets, some times can go over filtred ports) your provider can do only one thing to close your ip.

Actually, [D]DoSing on common ports such as 80, 443, 8080, etc is not the most effective way. The best way is usually to do the whole range of 1-65535. Also, just shut the machine down. Depending on the complexity of the script/program, it may stop if it senses that the packets aren't going through. Though, most people use premade tools or noobish scripts that just open a connection and loop without closing it continuously.
Or, if you want to be funny, reflect the packets/connections off to somewhere like FBI.Org. Your server will still be taking the hit and most likely stay offline, but they'll be unknowingly attacking a much bigger fish.
Anyway, jokes aside, there are quite a few good routers that can take the punch out of a [D]DoS attack. When I was working at HackThisSite!, we got DDoS attacks quite a lot, because people thought it was part of the "challenges". We ended up using a Cisco router and null routes to stop the attacks, and it actually worked quite well. For a little basic information on null routes, see this Wikipedia page. It ought to prove a wee bit useful to you.

DDoS is effectively impossible to stop. You can only filter it via hardware. Unless your server is running like 10-100gbit ethernet, the server itself cannot effectively handle it on its own. It has to be stopped before it gets to the server itself which is something the hosting company has to do. MOST of the time, they will be lazy and just nullroute ALL traffic to your server until it stops. If they have the option though, they would sell the service of blocking certain traffic at the hardware level, aka "ddos protection services", but even then, a strong enough attack can even totally take that down if it's too much for the hardware to handle. (but that takes a massive botnet to achieve)

While people can connect to your machine whether it by a conquer server or other means, it can be subject to a Denial of service attack(Who is Conquer ACTUALLY does a DDoS? 100% of them are DoS!)
I was talking to InfamousNoone the other day about this actually, Back in the day of HybridCO he was hosting it on his own computer, If he did that now he simply wouldn't have any internet, The conquer community has changed, before it was about the quality & features of a server to who got the players, now its all about "whos got the bigger **** in resources".
To put it simply times have changed, You either get a monster dedicated server that takes more then a home connection running a flood & some **** booter to take offline, Or you realise you've hit a brick wall, you then get up, 180 and retaliate at lightning speed.

Really it comes down to how the hosts network is designed, typically most decent switches offer 10/100mbps ddos filter with really expensive models offering 1gbps+ filtering, if your host is cheap and cheerful the ddos filtering likely isnt very good.
DDoS is designed to be unstoppable, it will scale effectively with more clients joining in, this is why you see Government websites being taken down, they will have far better protection than your ****** server, so yeah the simple fact of the matter is you can splash a load of cash on decent protection and it will mean sweet fa if the attacker just expands his botnet.

Can't say any of that would stop a good botnet, and it doesn't take but 15-30 minutes to write one in C++. Also, I work for the state of California, that would be rather amusing.

My home connection has a crappy upload threshold. I do know two people who run their own dedicated hosting companies, and my uncle has his own ISP. I suppose those would be great for it, but a waste of time. What point is there DDoSing some random Skiddie's server? Go DDoS TQ Digital instead, if you really have the time.

Lol, I doubt you "crack" any servers. Most newbies who [D]DoS use free linux shells.
Edit: Actually, if HackThisSite.org is still up, go make an account there and complete all of the "Programming" challenges. I made a lot of those. If you can complete them, I'll acknowledge you They're pretty simple.
