Hello everyone,
after my break, I am now active on the project again. Over the past months, I used the time to further deepen my knowledge in game development, especially with Unreal Engine.
My main focus has been on 3D models, animations, and the assembly of objects based on template data from the original game client. During this work, I realized that not all objects can be handled as static assets. Because of this, I started building my own data structure to properly solve these issues.
So far, this approach works well for most objects. However, there are still a few cases causing problems due to missing data or entries that cannot be clearly assigned. Most likely, these are objects that were still in development at the time or were never fully completed.
For the past two weeks, I have been actively working on the project again within the limits of my current possibilities. I have also already done a lot of work on the website.
As soon as level streaming in Unreal Engine works reliably and smoothly, I will present another preview video.
Thank you all for your patience and continued support.

Hello everyone,
here's another small update from me.
Unfortunately, I don't have any new videos or screenshots of my Unreal Engine 5 progress to share this time. Instead, I'd like to release a small project that should answer at least some of the questions I've been asked over the past months.
One of the questions I keep getting is: "How did you do that?"
Rather than answering the same questions over and over, I decided to package part of my workflow into a small Python project and make it freely available to anyone who is interested.
The tool reads an Archlord game client, extracts its data, and converts it into commonly used formats.
It can export:
* Textures
* Images
* 3D models including animations
* Terrain data
All 3D model exports are based on Archlord's grouped template system. Explaining that system in detail would go beyond the scope of this post.
Hopefully, this will be useful for anyone working on their own tools, research, or projects.

Have fun with it, and as always, feedback is very welcome!
P.S.: The tool was developed and tested using the 2013 Archlord client. Compatibility with older or newer client versions cannot be guaranteed. The terrain materials still require some manual adjustments. Texture blending/mixing is only partially supported by the GLTF format. However, the material names indicate the correct texture order, making it possible to reconstruct the terrain materials accordingly.

Hello everyone,
here's another small update from me for anyone who's interested or might find it useful for their own projects.
As some of you may know, the Archlord game client does not contain any spawn data. After some research, I found a table online that appears to be very close to the latest known state. I compared it with the world map, verified the information, and combined everything into a single resource.
Mir fehlen aktuell folgende Dateien:
- a010180t.tx1
- a010280t.tx1

Hello everyone,
I could use a little help from anyone who has different versions of the Archlord client.
I'm currently missing two texture files and haven't been able to find them in any client version I've checked so far.
The missing textures are:
- a010180t.tx1
- a010280t.tx1
It's entirely possible that these textures never actually existed and are simply leftover references in the mesh that were never used.
If anyone happens to have these files or finds them in another client version, I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know.
Just wanted to sincerely thank you for sharing your file extraction/conversion tool.
Have been looking for an animation converter for ages and can now finally continue with my model port to another game. Thanks for keeping archlord alive!
Not trying to hijack your thread but while porting over the models and animations to the other game I experiemented with the textures a bit.
Even though most are only 256x256px they have extremely fine detail. The output for some of the newest image generation models with the textures as input lead to exceptional results.
See attached a few example for the Archlord, the Royal Knights and his dragon Alcadia. I found this quite impressive for the first try and wanted to share.
If used on every texture and by adding bump maps etc. this could be a nice additional leap forward for making Archlord look better than ever once the UE port is complete.

Thanks for sharing your results!
Just to clarify my perspective: making the game look "better" or more modern isn't actually my goal. My sole focus is to stay as close to the original as humanly possible. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on why I played so much Archlord back in the day, especially when there were so many other successful MMORPGs around. And yes, I've spent countless hours revisiting Episodes 1, 3, 7, and 8 across various EMU projects just to relive those memories and track how the game evolved over all those years.
The game is 20 years old now. You don't just throw that history overboard to remake everything from scratch. If that's what I wanted, I wouldn't have spent so much time reading through, learning, and parsing the original game data—I would have just built my own game instead.
I also can't help but smile a bit when looking at other Unreal Engine 5 projects out there. They put so much effort into achieving a lot in a short amount of time, rather than diving into the details and staying true to what was already established. But to each their own—at the end of the day, any approach involves a massive amount of work, regardless of how the result is achieved or what it looks like.
By the way, I've actually moved away from Unreal Engine 5 myself. It requires way too much performance and offers poor support for open/raw file formats. Especially version 5.8 lost a lot of useful support in favor of pushing AI tools and agent options. Any developer who knows what they're doing and has a clear goal doesn't really need that.

Honestly, I think every contribution to Archlord that comes from enthusiasm and love for the game deserves encouragement rather than cynicism. Whether it's a private server, a tool, a guide or a remake, it all keeps this world alive a little longer, and there aren't many of us left who still care. I'm not here to compete with anyone; I'm doing this because I (for example) love the game, just like everyone else in this thread.

It was completely non-intentional for my previous message to come across as a competition. I have huge respect for all new ideas and implementations in the community.
I'm just a bit old-school and personally striving for a very strict 1:1 replica of the original game. Please don't get me wrong: I wouldn't have shared my tools and findings for free if I saw anyone here as competition—quite the opposite! Seeing other projects helps bring in new ideas and fuels progress. My comment about smiling was meant as a positive reaction to everything that's currently happening and developing in the community.

No worries, I read it the wrong way then. Respect for going 1:1, that's a ton of work, and thanks for sharing your stuff with everyone. Good to see Archlord getting some love, regardless of where it comes from.

That’s a really great question! I ask myself every single day how long it’s actually going to take. But I keep noticing that I constantly stumble upon small details or new features that I either never knew existed or had completely forgotten about. And that’s what makes it so much fun right now!
Currently, I'm working on the login and game servers, including the web interface for administration and events. The Korean translations also continue to be quite a challenge—not just the text in the INI files, but also the general functions extracted from the disassembled alefclient.exe across all 8 episodes.
I'll be creating a short video later this month to share my progress with you all. Since I switched engines, I still need to run plenty of tests to ensure nothing was ported incorrectly—especially because I can and must write everything from scratch here, without relying on third-party plugins that I'd have to learn first. All in all, progress with the new engine is already much further along than it ever was with Unreal Engine!

Hi everyone,
Here’s a short look at my Archlord recreation. The 40-second video circles Anchorville, flies over the southern part of the city, and shows a full day-to-night cycle in time-lapse.
The footage was captured from the running game world without the HUD. The project is still in development; this preview is mainly a look at the city, its atmosphere, and its lighting.

How does Anchorville look to you? I’d especially welcome feedback on the camera movement and the day-night atmosphere.

May I ask why you decided to abandon the UE5 engine? Out of curiosity. Was it the optimization nightmare... Or what was the incentive?

English
The Unreal Engine is extremely powerful and offers a ton of features, but it is also quite bloated and requires a massive amount of setup just to recreate a classic game like Archlord.
I haven't really abandoned the project in Unreal—the project files are still sitting there. However, my experience with Unreal Engine 5 hasn't been great when it comes to making steady progress and rebuilding the game to feel like the original. I'll definitely keep an eye on Unreal Engine 6 and the new Verse language to see what becomes possible in the future, but waiting for all of that will take way too long.
That's why I chose an engine where I can write my own scripts quickly and directly, much like how the original client was built back in 2017, which makes everything far easier to understand and trace.
Even in your videos, I still notice a few flaws that drove me crazy in Unreal—like the terrain ground textures or monsters airwalking. Every engine has its quirks, and you constantly have to adapt. The original RenderWare Engine accomplished what it needed to back then, even if it obviously no longer meets today's standards.
On top of that, stress tests with over 300 players in a single location are no easy task in Unreal Engine if you want to keep FPS stable during castle sieges and the final Archlord battle.
Am I completely satisfied with my current engine? No, of course not. But the progress so far is much better, and it brings me a lot closer to the original game than Unreal Engine did.
