Are leveling bots dangerous?

I have been reading recently online about these leveling bots and wanted to try one out. I'm just curious what is the chance of getting banned for using just a leveling bot for maybe 1-3 hours a day and does the bot version matter because the one's i find are for 1.12 and classic is 1.13.4.
