I didn't success to find the skrillex post.
I had read the full missme post.
I'm *not* criticizing either of these two intentions or achievements.
I simply note that original DDS files *does* use alpha channel - not using it gives the same result than using the DXT1 format (which is just 50% lighter), I do not assume that sonov has deliberately messed up half of the space; the rendering engine does expect it and use it, definitively.
meantime, cutting alpha channel "just" avoid that an image saved by /nvidia plugin for PS/ (and that module only) is turned into a candle; still the "alpha shine" exists, turn your toon facing or counter-facing the sun and u will see shine; it also prevents images to be displayed with *S3TC spec compliant* soft (like nxView or other OpenGL based softwares).
regarding your googladvertising ... i will assume it's a joke.
Edit: To explain my concern: I've just developed a DDS decoder to use it into my editing tools, w/o alpha info i have no choice but to display a full (since it's opaque) image will all garbage not relevant for the image, with alpha data, only the actually used part of image (the part mapped onto the 3D model) can be displayed.
