Come on Skrillex, all the credits have been given in Missesme's tutorial.

Thank you again by the way Missesme for re-posting this useful tutorial, it made me look through texture editing deeper.

hmm what "tut" is supposed to stand for there ??
ok, let's say some inventors have weird susceptibility.

cutting off the alpha channel of dds file is a hack, not an efficient, fully satisfactory, etc, etc, to manage light reflection on stuff.
the 3D model - i assume defined by the 3DC file - does contains information regarding these light effects.

if someone has - if you have - a "tutorial" on how being able to control and customize these effects I'll very interested, so far I just read a way to avoid that PS screws up the images, but w/o controling what it does, w/o understanding what options are available (and the nvidia doc. is quite bad).

I didn't success to find the skrillex post.
I had read the full missme post.
I'm *not* criticizing either of these two intentions or achievements.

I simply note that original DDS files *does* use alpha channel - not using it gives the same result than using the DXT1 format (which is just 50% lighter), I do not assume that sonov has deliberately messed up half of the space; the rendering engine does expect it and use it, definitively.

meantime, cutting alpha channel "just" avoid that an image saved by /nvidia plugin for PS/ (and that module only) is turned into a candle; still the "alpha shine" exists, turn your toon facing or counter-facing the sun and u will see shine; it also prevents images to be displayed with *S3TC spec compliant* soft (like nxView or other OpenGL based softwares).

regarding your googladvertising ... i will assume it's a joke.

Edit: To explain my concern: I've just developed a DDS decoder to use it into my editing tools, w/o alpha info i have no choice but to display a full (since it's opaque) image will all garbage not relevant for the image, with alpha data, only the actually used part of image (the part mapped onto the 3D model) can be displayed.

A lot of people out there depend on Photoshop to edit .dds files. I couldn't use Photoshop. Instead, I used GIMP. It's free, and you can view, edit and convert .dds files in it. 2 things are needed: 1) Gimp The download link for the current version is here. 2) .dds plugin for Gimp (this is used so Gimp can access .dds files). The current version is here.
