Certainly possible. I've seen a GM totally walk away from his server and it ran for several months until (I guess) the hosting term ran out. the atmosphere toward the end on that server was seriously toxic.
About the only folks that stayed til it closed up was dupers, forge & speed hackers. Was pretty sad to see.
