This should clarify the questions on the "Base Address" search.

This image was done in paint really quickly. The idea was to (hopefully) clear up at least the reasoning behind the "base address" search for people are aren't ASM literate, and don't know much about structure memory layout, etc.

I'm hoping that the diagram at the top which shows the layout of several linked structures should make it more obvious what the tutorial here () is doing.

Should be easy enough to understand if only because of the diagrammatic representation, and hopefully, if linked to from the original "base address" guide article, should reduce the number of questions asking for clarification/more tutorials, and generally reduce low IQ posts and forum clutter.

Also, has anyone actually reverse engineered this game to the extent that they know the layout and location of say, the inventory structures? I kind of want to make a crack to see if I can change an item in my inventory into another, although I doubt it's possible since the inventory is most likely kept in the server side. But it's worth a try...

Yeah that's kind of in the same vain as duping, which is not possible - All server side.
There are some examples of traversing inventory structures around here though, for example

That thread has a plethora of nice offsets and stuff ^^

It's quite funny changing the item's mods and getting a ring with for example +5000 pdef, which then auto adjusts by adding a mod with -5000 pdef. Or something like it. It's been a while since I played with it, but there were some funny things that could happen.

And yay for pet peeves, your post is indeed helpful for people with programming knowledge. For those without any, they'll just have to follow step-by-step tutorials without understanding what they're doing or why they're doing it

I have to say though, that 'game hacking' has improved my programming a bit, as now I understand the lower level bits better (having read tons on info on it in order to understand wtf I was doing )

I completely agree. I've done a bunch of embedded C, a little C++, lots of php, javascript, VB etc, but actually digging into the internal structure of other programs is really quite enlightening. It's an awesome way to really get a hold on more modern object oriented programming as well as the very low level assembly stuff. Anyone ever programmed a microcontroller in assembler? xD

P.S. I love C#
Sucked at first, but now I don't think I'd want to program in anything else (Well... maybe VB for non performance sensitive applications )

There's a lot to be said for strict languages.
