I don't think it is about having friends or not, for instance I haven't been able to get to play with my friends due to our different time zones; yet as soon as they enable the private server rentals, this will be changing.
Edit:
Well, wipe is taking place right now, and servers won't be up for the next 6 hours...

It was said that everything was going to get wiped, now, the maintenance lasted over 4 more hours than expected, as well, that so called "starter package" isn't anything like expected as they said first 10 characters would get it, huge lie, they added once the package in the Global Inventory, and that's it; to lastly try to join servers and get an error... I tried for about an hour to get into servers, with no result

I haven't experienced server errors, yet I have been spawn killed at least 50 times, since the upgrade to 70 players per server, and the change to Open Beta, there are no lowly populated servers, and interesting fact, everyone is KOSing and spawn killing...
Actually I haven't been able to play at all, because I get spawn killed every time I create a new character, and they kill me even before graphics have loaded, totally unplayable for me right now
