Obtaining New Skills - Your character will not start with any skills. Once
you have completed your primary profession training you will be awarded
three skills from your primary profession; once you complete your secondary
profession training you will be awarded two skills from your secondary
profession. Additional skills may be earned through various small quests in
pre-searing Ascalon. The real fun of character development, and the primary
method of advancing your character in Guild Wars, is learning new skills.
This can be done four different ways.
1) Learn Skills Directly From A Trainer - There are several skill trainers
around the various towns and outposts of Tyria. Each of these NPCs will
offer to train you in the use of slightly different skills; for a listing of
what skills each NPC can teach you, head to the Trainers' Skills Lists.
Simply find and speak to these trainers to ask them to train you. In order
for them to train you, you must have an unspent skill point and enough gold
to reimburse them for their time and effort (gold cost = the number of skill
points you have previously spent + 1; in other words, if you had spent 18
skills points and then decided to buy a skill from Captain Arne in Ascalon
City, he would charge you 19 gold). This is by far the simplest method of
skill acquisition, but the skills available in this way are very limited.
2) Signet of Capture - The Signets of Capture can be purchased from any of
the NPC Skill Trainers found in the list above, with the exception of the
trainer in Ascalon City. It is purchased in the same manner as the other
skills that the skill trainers offer and the cost works the same way. The
Signets of Capture can then be equipped in your skill bar like any other
skill.
To learn a skill by using a Signet of Capture, you must have it equipped in
your skill bar prior to venturing out on a mission or into an explorable
area. When you find a boss from either your primary or secondary profession
using a skill you would like, simply click on the Signet of Capture while
targeting the boss to activate the capture. This takes a few seconds and
you, as well as the boss, must remain alive until the capture is complete or
you will not successfully capture the skill. With a successful capture, the
Signet of Capture is permanently replaced by that skill, both in your skill
bar for the remainder of that mission as well as your skill inventory..
If you realize you are capturing a skill you really don't want, you can
cancel by clicking again on the Signet of Capture, using another skill, or
perform any other action. You will have to be quick about it as those few
seconds it takes go by fast and once you've learned a skill, there is no way
to 'unlearn' it.
3) Skill Charms with Necklaces - Skill Necklaces are a means of learning a
skill temporarily. This is a great way to try out skills you are considering
learning permanently to see how they fit in with your character's build
and/or try out something from another profession. You can also use these to
round out a team's strategy and build for PvP.
To learn a skill from a skill charm, you must first get your hands on a
skill charm. You can ask someone to make a charm for you if they already
have that skill, purchase a charm from the Skill Charm Vendor, or gamble for
one from the Exotic Skill Charm Vendor. See the Merchants Guide for details
on the vendor interfaces. If the skill you want to learn is from either your
primary or secondary profession then you will need to buy a Basic Charm
Necklace; if the skill you want to learn is from any other profession, then
you will need to buy a Superior Charm Necklace. The Charm Necklaces can be
purchased from Outfitters around the world. The Basic Charm Necklace costs 1
gold and the Superior Charm Necklace costs 25 gold. Activate the skill by
double left clicking on the necklace and then clicking on the charm. The new
skill will then appear in your skills list under a separate heading titled
Charms. Once you have learned the skill, you have 24 real-life hours to use
it before you will need to use another Charm; the time remaining that you
can use that skill will appear next to it in your skills list.
4) Skill Charms with Skill Rings - Skill Rings are a means of learning a
skill of either your primary or secondary profession permanently. Skill
Rings always have a profession attached to them (i.e. a Ranger Skill Ring),
but they drop from bosses of any profession, so a ranger boss could drop a
warrior ring. These rings are rare, so they and are best not wasted on a
skill you can obtain easily from using the Signet of Capture. The profession
on the Skill Ring and the profession of the skill on the Skill Charm both
must match, and also must be of one of your professions. For example, a
Ranger Skill Ring used on the ranger's skill Barrage for your Warrior/Ranger
would work, but would not work for your Necromancer/Elementalist.
Learning the skill from a Skill Charm, using a Skill Ring, is simple.
Double-click on the Skill Ring, then click on the Skill Charm. The skill you
have just learned will now appear in your skill list, sorted under the
appropriate profession it's from and you can now use it like any other skill
you have permanently learned.
There are a total of 75 skills available for each of the six professions,
making a combined total 150 skills available to each character (primary and
secondary professions). Each skill you learn will broaden your strategic
options, allowing you develop a virtually limitless number of character
variations.
