When you start off crafting in EQ2 it can be very confusing. I made the mistake of not doing any crafting while on the IoR, but the game still makes you a lvl 3 crafter by the time you get the your home city if you do crafting or not. Once you are on the mainland in each starting zone there is a cellar door that leads to the basic crafting zone. Here there is almost everything you will need to get started crafting. Hhowever before you get overzealous and try to start crafting right away I reccomend you attain at least lvl 9 in your adventuring class before you begin your crafting life full time. I say this because you will need to have a little bit of cash to get you started, and you will have to harvest some stuff that may be near some aggro mobs, therefore you will need to be able to keep yourself alive.
Ok first some tips for quick and easy cash and crafting. All this information will be as coming from harvesting in oakmyst forest as I believe that is the best place to go to harvest. First of all the easiest stuff to get to craft on are fish, and roots. Roots are very important because they make a lot of the basic ingredients needed for crafting. Also fish are great because they are very abundant. Sunfish are the best to craft on as there are a lot of things Sunfish can be made into all the way to level 9. However if you are good enough at trading and can find a lot of pelts, pelts are the absolute best to craft on becasue actual players will buy a lot of the stuff you make from pelts i.e. six and ten slot bags. But for the sake of speed I would go with fish and roots. Roots can be found at anything with the name of MUDDY ROOTS, they usually have about 2 roots for every three tries at harvesting. As for fish, go to the small pond in Oakmyst forest and fish. The small clusters of fish give stuff like frog legs, coldwater fish, and sunfish. The Hovel of trout gives you a fish that you can sell and make 9c at any merchant. Early on in the game these fish can actually make you some money. There is anywhere from 4-6 groups to harvest from on a 5 min spawn time.
Dont worry about harvesting 20 of one thing at a time as you will only need to craft a few of any even lvl recipe to level at a time. What I would reccomend is going to Oakmyst for two spawn periods (10 min. or so) and then take the stuff you have harvested and craft with it. Here comes the part where you will need a little coin to get started. Keep in mind you will not be able to make money off of crafting til at least lvl 8 or so, all the stuff you craft either needs to be sold back for coin to keep buying new ingredients or recipe books. Every recipe requires a fuel item that cannot be harvested or made, I think they are all only 6 c, but this will add up quick. Also many of the basic recipes require a liquid, which you will usually have to buy, these are also 6 c. THe best rule of thumb early on is craft what you have, I say that because some people get caught up wanting to craft weapons or bags right from the start. This is foolish because you are just trying to level right now, and no sane player will buy a weapon from a lvl 5 crafter. All those seemingly useless resources you have harvested should be used up.
Once you hit about lvl 5 or 6 your recipes will start getting much more complicated and 1 higher level recipe may require you to craft 8 or 9 different things to get the final product. This may seem aggrivating at first, especially since the recipe book is just one HUGE list and it takes forever to get used to. But keep at it, because if you are good enough at gathering specific resources you will be lvl 9 in no time. Once you hit level 8 or 9 you can start making some stuff for coin, keep in mind this coin made should only be used to reinvest in your crafting. I reccomend making six slot bags. Every single person no matter what needs these, and not many people seem to be taking the time to make them. They are a big pain in the rear as you have to craft about 10 times to make one bag, but you should be able to easliy tripple all your money if you invest all your money into making these.
Well there you are at lvl 9,good luck and have a happy crafting life.
