Bring the Good Old Flyff Back!!!

Well i just needed to bring this topic up to express my toughts besides people saying Flyff is a dead game which i personally completely disagree. I know the game is not officially popular as it used to be, having tons of loyal and active players but NO, the game did not dead actually itīs more alive than before, even wth itīs popularity dropping and years after since first version of the game, it have evolved so much, from V6 to V22 to be released soon is like a huge advance, including many awesome updates, systems, reworks, revamps and etc. Well in my opinion after the release of hacked files for private servers we had everything in our hands to make the game even more popular and welcoming to veterans and new players but instead of that we failed miserably... like instead of improving the original game we simply made everything automatic, fast, ready... boring. Literally killing the essence of the game, itīs like, "Flyff" is not just a name, itīs the basic purpose of the game ">FLY< For >Fun<" instead of making this experience more interesting ppl just came up with the idea of a teleport system, like really? The whole continent was structured to be visited using flying rides and this is just the first point of many others like instant job change? Guys... like... this SUCKS, i remember from V6 to v12 the anxiety the urge, the excitement to reach level 15 and 60 to change Jobs and it was so fun, like doing the tasks, exploring the maps and reaching out to NPCs hidden in places we didnt even imagine to exist in the game and oh the acomplishment, the best feeling ever sometimes it took a whole day to finish jobchange quests it was quite stressful sometimes but ina good way. Getting your guild together to do CW, damage dealers shouting around trying to find a RM for Plevel and Pfarming for greens and rarities (because come on, whats so fun on playing a game all by yourself? Soloing everything without connection to other players? Again, sucks. And this is the point we try to reach out today like that nostalgic feeling that we cannot feel anymore because the game is simply automated. Also the insane high rates and eased/automated way to get high tier stuff, instead of farming on masquerpets or bosses why not just making Perin ou any other shit currency shop to buy them? Nah it also sucks... Ultimate and Baruna upgrade... something that i also found very exciting getting your high tier gears and trying to make it the best on diferent types of upgrade systems this is what made us interested on keep playing the same game for years and not letting go because everything has a purpose, nowadays you join a shitty Pserver and can make a top class char in a day so your excitement dies and you try to repeat everything again on diferent pservers to try to feel that excitement you felt when you first played the original game but it never happens. Well there are so many other ruined features that i could point here including donation abuse and so on but i hope you guys get me. itīs not a complaint just a point of view and i know many will disagree, but again itīs just my opinion. I still think that there will be a developer that will see this huge oportunity and bring the good old Flyff back for us again, until that i will try that myself but knowing nothing about C++ and coding makes it more dificult to me than it sounds even more when the resources available are all unstable, but i really want to make it a possibility for us.

I prefer the older versions myself tbh.

Intro:
Your post is a bit hard to read as it has no formatting. I think my post will be a bit longer, so I will try to use headlines and split it up into smaller chunks to make it more readable. When I read your post, it kinda felt like you were floating in (childhood) memories but at the same time have quite a bit of anger regarding the current state of FLYFF, whether it be the Official Flyff or the Pserver scene. I wrote this while watching a series, so hopefully, I wasn't too distracted while writing.

The First Flyff Experience:
netHox introduced me to this game in Version 6 in 2006. At first, I really did not like the game at all, as I was a PVP player and mainly played shooters like Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, and some RPG games like Gothic II, Oblivion, etc. So, the first impression of this game was really like, "Meh, what is he playing there?" I remember it quite vividly as I was at his place, and we were about to go out to meet some friends. I was a bit early, and he still needed to pack some stuff and get ready to leave. While he was doing that, I sat in front of his PC, and FLYFF was open, so I clicked on some monsters, moved around, just out of pure boredom. After those 5 minutes, I thought, "Maybe I should actually try playing it; it's more fun than I thought."

Official Flyff (US Lawolf Server V6 - V11):

The Start
Hell yeah! It was 2006, and my PC with a 550MHZ CPU was almost burning as I started playing. You are right; it was fun to explore the world. It was also exciting to find stuff and NPCs to change the job. You did not know anything about the game and were just exploring. If you fell off the bridge in Flaris, you were kinda scared of never finding your way back. When you were first leveling at Bang and a high-level player pulled some Bangs over, and you were suddenly dead without warning – it was really great to experience this for the first time. The Old Flaris theme, the sound it makes when hitting Lawolfs. It was just great, and for free, really? No catch to that? Damn great!

Years of Playing with Different Chars
I was hooked and played Flyff exclusively for some years. I remember the old knockback rates when you played BowJester. With a group of 3 BowJesters, no Giant could do anything. It was knocked from Crane to Steamwalker in no time - Fun times! Later on, knockback was nerfed, and ultimately BowJesters were killed due to Ultimate Weapons.

Leveling with a lvl 60 Psychkeeper at Glaphan was also dope, a so-called "Crucio-Psychkeeper," and an Assist that barely kept you alive was fun as well. Making good exp and requiring basically no equipment at all. Such a fair and cheap class to play!

"Looking for contri party!" It's probably the sentence I have read the most in Official Flyff back then. In the Dekane Mine at "Pinkys," the game sometimes even became laggy just due to how many players were leveling.

I never played RM myself, but I know netHox did for a while to get a high-level RM to support and buff his own chars, and I actually remember him telling me that it was even fun to chat while leveling and that some players were even so nice to give him EXP scrolls to keep up with leveling so they could continue to level up together.

We ended up creating a Guild, and after half a year, we tried Clockworks for the first time and failed miserably. We noticed it was just not any monster. It was really special, strong, and we came way too unprepared. We lasted the full hour but barely got him to half HP. Even though we lost and were very disappointed... it... yeah, it is still a great memory, and sure enough, a month or two later, we finally got revenge :P

Talking to people was different back then; it kinda felt more like a conversation. You would hang out in Darkon and just talk to people, and they were not in a rush. Everyone was kinda helpful; Guild members lent you money to get equipment. Pretty much all was in-game, not on external systems like Discord, Skype, or anything. You got online, checked who was online, and just had a great time exploring the world, trying new things, and, for sure, failing a million times.

My highest char ever in V7?! was a BowJester that got to 106. Back then, this was worth something and took months to get to that level, not like half a day as of today.

Free to Play vs. Pay to Win
I would never have thought that this would be written by me, but Flyff was fair. I remember that with 50€ (like a full-priced game), you would be able to get your equipment and weapon to +8, get jewelry, still have some money left for food, and could even get some amplis afterwards. A friend even got a weapon to +10 with only 10€ worth of Spros.

Back then, we couldn't wait for a new patch; all events felt great! Patches then felt like Christmas and having a birthday on the same day. I remember having school holidays around Christmas, and there was a Christmas event. All my friends were online; I got a new PC for Christmas, and Flyff was finally smooth to play. These times? Pure Gold, Flyff at its peak, pure fun, no hate, no pain, no "WTF is this shitty patch."

Private Servers on the Horizon:

They Exist?
I remember this clear as day as well. It must have been in 2007/2008, a sunny day, and it was time for a school trip to Italy. When I woke up, I checked the forums and saw something about a "private server" and "Caali files." I thought it was a prank. Private Servers for Flyff?! Clearly a joke! I clicked on the post and read. I could not believe it was real! Excitement to the roof! We could even get GM rights? Teleport around? Spawn monsters? Generate Items? I thought I was still in bed, dreaming, and would wake up any moment. When we met up at school, I told netHox and the other Flyff players what I saw. At first, they did not believe it. We almost wanted to play sick just so we could stay home and check it out.

Caali / Lighting Files
These were emulator files, not official. High exp rates, great to have some quick fun but crashy, always need hamachi to even be able to connect. Private servers back then were kind of the "let's play it for some hours and return to offi afterward" thing. Everyone knew they were not really meant to be played "for real."

FlyForFame
Rumors started. A hacker group got the official files, and soon there will be a Pserver with official server files? Yeah sure, lol. I never thought this could be true, but then some screenshots got leaked, and the FlyForFame forum started. Could it be? Is this a prank? This is really going to happen?

And it did. It happened. I was there when it launched, and I could not process what I saw. Caali files could barely handle 100 players before they crashed. The second the server opened, I was online and stood in Flaris seeing the other players logging in. 5, 10, 50, 79, 100, and I lost count, but I remember that my FPS went below 10 as there were just so many players. I kinda relived the whole Flyff experience again with 25x rates, an even fairer cash shop, as all upgrade items could be bought with penya. This video is from a later stage of FlyForFame but it still somewhat gives the correct "feeling" from back then:

From here the Downfall of Flyff started from my POV

Official Flyff (PC)

to the changelogs of the old Flyff versions. At this point in time, it was clear what the path of the official Flyff was: Money, Money, Money. Azria? Pay for it! Buff Pets? Pay for it! Ultimate weapons upgrading? Pay for it! Stat Pets? Pay to reset the Level! Stat Pet died? Guess what? Pay for it! Coral Island? Baruna System? Jewelry upgradable to +20? Awakenings revert? PAY FOR IT, GIVE US ALL YOUR MONEY!

The game quickly transitioned from 50€ for almost perfectly geared to 10k for a perfect char. Whales welcome!

Private Servers

Early Phase
After the official Flyff files were public, and tutorials came up, more and more "real" private servers emerged. While at first, it was fun, and every weekend there was a new server to try, it also became clear pretty soon that Pserver admins noticed that they could make good money from it. At first, it was overpowered weapons in the shop. Then it was the wipe phase where they "started" over once or twice a year, and everyone who did not message them in time, all donation points were gone.

Nowadays
Flyff Servers "fail" most of the time now, and this is kinda a calculated and planned fail, designed for short-time fun before they soft wipe (Season Server), or there is really a dedicated team that really puts love into it, but they change and customize so much that it is not Flyff anymore.

Cash Grab Method: Hi Polux There are servers that are calculated to fail but attract a lot of people at the start. It is a business. Start with a boom, get donations, create weekly "limited" fashion or item stores. Make players feel they are missing out if they do not donate. Close the server, come back after a while with the "We are doing it better now, we know exactly what went wrong last time! Trust us and, by the way, get your wallets ready for the launch."

Season Servers: This could not be further away from the OG Flyff spirit. When I first heard about this, I was like: "They wanna do what now?" Flyff is a linear game. Level up, become stronger, upgrade gear, level up even more. Season Server is quite the opposite. They Soft-Wipe your chars after a limited time, and by transferring them to the "Main" server that has barely any players and all your progress made is worthless. If something is not really balanced? Does not matter, new season, new try. You donated? New Season, new donations but of course you can access all the stuff you bought from before on the worthless main server no one plays.

Is this still Flyff?: There were Servers in the past like ApexFlyff, KingdomFlyff, Emerald Flyff, Stellar Flyff, and currently ChroniclesOfMadrigal. Especially for ChroniclesOfMadrial, I am quite convinced that the developer and admins are very kind people that do not try to screw players or are financially oriented. They really do this with passion, love, and dedication, but at least for now, all those servers failed in the end. From what I hear, the players really are impressed at the beginning and are loving this new experience, but after some months, they realize this is not Flyff anymore; this is like a new MMO. They do not stick to it long-term.

Too much professionalism: Flyff was and should never become too polished. Flyff is the Fast Food in the MMO World. If you want a McDonald's Burger, you want it to be cheesy, fatty, and taste unhealthy. If you want to watch an episode of a 90s sci-fi series, you want it to look cheesy and have the charm of that time. When you look at Flyff, it has this special kind of look. It is not very detailed; it has this old charm. More often, I see new or remade maps that just do not look like Flyff. A good example of this "polished look" is Dragon Crusade. There is a video of how it looked back in the day, a beautifully remade map, and when you look at it, you instantly have the Flyff feeling, nothing self-made could look more like Flyff than this Map: (This Video is 13 Years old)
At some point, they exchanged it with the ApexFlyff Map. You can clearly see it is way more detailed, looks impressive, but nothing like Flyff anymore:

You said yourself that you would like to bring back an old-school classic Pserver, but your coding knowledge is very limited. Quite a few people tried to do this over the last years, but it never worked out pretty well due to the lack of coding skills, time, or even money. One approach to that was FlyffV7.com that launched in 2018. It was feeling just right! Exactly what OG Flyff felt like, and it was the name promised, real FlyffV7. Sadly, the server did not last long, had almost no advertising, but still, somewhat around 100-300 players (including me). I know that they had duping issues, but if that server ever returns, I will be the first one spamming F5 on the website until the server is online.

The new Hope: Flyff Universe

A "remaster" of Flyff by a talented crew that is led by Aishio and backed by Gala Money? The promise to go back to V7 and do everything better? Is it 2006 again? Did all the prayers have been heard now? The preregistration was enormous. Wow Classic launched a while before that, and it boomed, so we knew. Going back to V7 and just adjusting the graphics a bit, fixing the exploits, increasing the resolution, and make sure it's not locked to 60FPS, so just bring it to the modern technology and finally give the players what they were begging for?

The Beta Test was about to roll out. The only thing I knew was that Neuz.io was the early alpha and had a web client which I thought would also be the case for Universe, that there would be an additional Web Client. I was ready, just like the old times, a pile of snacks, some energy drinks, and ready to do a 24-hour play session. I did not read any changelogs or read the Discord channel like in the old days, do not read anything, find out by yourself, and if you need help, ask ingame! It launched, I searched for the download link, but there was none. Only the Web version is available? Well, maybe it's just the Beta, and they want to test the stability. Well, okay, let's go! I logged in, played until level 3, and it did not feel good, rubberbanding of doom, what are those violets? Giants with strange special attack patterns? I was confused, so I checked the changelogs. BowJesters? Nope. All classes have been rebalanced, goodbye old Flyff balance. Google Captchas in-game that block input while AOEing and are fking annoying?

I was very disappointed. This is not the FlyffV7 that it should have been. When they started to test the Cash Shop while being in Beta and instantly did a x2 Top Up event after beta, it was clear which way Flyff Universe would take, and it was followed by more and more F2P-destroying patches. Ranger was a cheap class that could really good HnR Aoe without good equip. It just took some time to kill the mobs with a low-end equip. Timings were introduced. Did not kill the monsters in a short amount of time? Well, then they run off. Just upgrade your gear, and then you can kill them in time. Battlepass? Give us your money. Limited time to buy fashion with speed? Sure! Give us your money. Loot boxes? Sure, give us your money. You want a pet that picks up items faster just like all Pserver have it adjusted to? Sure, give us your money, but make sure to give it to us every 30 days. We are so convinced from this new Flyff version that we will outsource the publishing to another company and soon introduce crypto into the game.

It really is incomprehensible how this has happened. The prerequisites were there: Money, A talented team, the knowledge from Wow that this can work. The will to make it multiplatform. Imagine in a different world where they would have done things differently.

Frostiae is in the team one that is very talented and was also remaking Flyff in Unity alone. Take a look at the progress that was made by him alone, without publisher money, without a big team:

Imagine they would just have dumped that web version and did it like Genshin Impact. Native Multiplatform. Imagine you would sit there playing Flyff Universe on your Playstation, Xbox, PC, Phone natively with an underlying engine that gets developed and improved constantly by a million-dollar company. Imagine how many more players it could have attracted being in the Playstation Store, Xbox Store, Steam, Google Play, App Store. You are having a shop/vendor open, and something gets sold or you get a pm? Push notification to your phone.

Do not get me wrong here - It is not easy to develop an MMO for the browser and make it playable to the level it is at now. I know that it takes effort, sweat, and tears to make this happen, and not everything is bad in Flyff Universe. Clearly, still many players have fun with the game.

The future

Flyff is not dead and will probably never be. Flyff Universe was an unexpected surprise. Season Servers were an unexpected surprise. There is still hope that there will be an official or private server making the game feel good. Ironically enough, netHox and I made a concept some years ago for an OG Flyff. Sadly, there is no time to make it happen, and it probably will never happen, but there is hope. There were ups and downs all the time in Flyff, just remember to never search for "Flyff Prankster is a gangster" on youtube. Really do not do that.

Cheers,
Aiden

There is a video of how it looked back in the day, a beautifully remade map, and when you look at it, you instantly have the Flyff feeling, nothing self-made could look more like Flyff than this Map: (This Video is 13 Years old) At some point, they exchanged it with the ApexFlyff Map.

Cheers,
Aiden
Thanks for bringing back so many good memories from that era. Iīm sorry about the poor quality format on my text and will improve that next time, i was just strugling with my pserver files and needed to spit it out, but yeah you have brought what i had to say with text richness and i love it.

I really wanted to know how top players from v6-9 are today, people from guilds like (Charmed, Envy, PhoenixIgnited, Enchanted).

Also i remember being IP banned when Augmentation and Termination hacks came out, DUDE! Like auto instant monster kills, going invisible, teleporting, killing other players anywhere (even in safe areas), that was gold, NForce did an amazing job back then, i wish he could bring it back to newer versions.

I remember me and 2 other friends got online and started messing around the game, around darkon 3 making new Chars, and then GM Norielc and Chris got online to stop us and we just started killing them with no mercy for like 30 minutes straight until they figured they could ban our IPīs that was chaos... I could make a level 99 Psy in like an hour.

Well... overall theres a lot to talk about with a lot of enthusiasm and i just hope to finish my V6 server as soon as possible to bring this experience back to reality.

Maybe controversial take (or not?) but the Flyff you are looking for doesn't exist.

You don't want the old v15/v7 whatever version you first played at back, because those versions are bad. What you want back is to relive the memories/nostalgia of being young and experiencing flyff for the first time.

You want that magical feeling about discovering everything about flyff for the first time, not caring about how unbalanced, pay2win, feature & content-empty the game actually is and you just want to kill monsters with friends and not thinking about anything.

Unfortunately, that moment is gone and you cannot bring it back.

If it would work, pservers would already have made a clean v7/v15 etc server. Since pservers generally do what players want or what works. Ofcourse there are lots of different kinds of players with different ideals but I think it shows that no server tries to attempt this kind of flyff.

I think we can all agree that nobody has any trust left in Gala to do anything decent with the game, after Universe turned out to be a balant cash-grab.

The reality is that flyff (especially in the early versions) was:
  • Incredibly Pay2Win (fixable if you run it as a pserver, but that has other problems)
  • Has basically 0 content aside from leveling up, which is literally just a mob-grind with barely any questing or other interactions aside from 'kill monster, get exp'
  • Has incredibly bad balance to the point where certain classes are either very bad or very OP. And lets not even talk about PvP balance.
  • Generally incredibly lacking in basic QOL features or anything interesting

And these days, people are not going to play that stuff anymore, its things we happily ignored when we were young and still discovering video games but that time is in the past.

Very sad truth but youīre right, i donīt think just bringing the old versions alive would consequently bring the feelings you mentioned just like it was before.
