just drag an drop the texture in .jpg format on the mesh or Create a new Material ( left botto Corner) , choose a Texture in Atribut window ( right bottom Corner) and Applie the Material to the Mesh

little hint:
just remember jpg has no alpha channel like tga if you need transparency
