If I may throw-in my 2 pennies:
you can't say that VPS are, in generally ****.
It's nice to isolate a "server" if it's exposed to the net in case it gets attacked.
VPSses are there for a reason, and large scale company use virtual + non-virtual servers.
THe thing is that VPS machines are not dedicated, and have a lack of performance if the hypervising host has quite a few of them. A VPS isn't meant to run and host gameservers. Actually many providers forbid you to run proccess-intensive applications (like gameservers) on them.
VPS are more meant for little things like "simple" homepages, socks/http proxies, some kind of automated scripts which run from time to time, or testing environments for things that aren't so res hungry.
Bottom Line: every server type is there for a reason and has its advantages.
In this case, hosting a game on a VPS, isn't really smart.
VPS aren't meant do do these tasks.
