DarkOrbit 2008 - Offline PvE Clone

Hey guys,

Long time no see !

Back in 2022 I had the ambitious idea to remake a 1:1 clone of DarkOrbit in its 2008 version, after months of work, I made a base for the game and today, decided to share it with a few people for testings ! Since it was the first time I let somebody else play the game, I decided to record this small gameplay video and share the whole concept publicly (I already share everything on my discord server tho)

What are the plans

I'm planning on making a 1:1 (or almost) clone of the game, offline at first, balanced and enjoyable as a solo adventure


What is done already

- Navigation and fighting system
- Most of the shop (missing some animations)
- Basic equipment system (for now only one config and the drones can't be equipped yet)
- Cargo boxes, bonus boxes and resources can be collected
- Resources can be refined in the lab, gear can be upgraded at the lab, resources can be sold at the space station
- All the lower maps are available
- Mobs from the lower maps have been implemented
- AI players with a basic behaviour, they are roaming around the map destroying mobs, they tend to help you destroying mobs aswell to make your progression easier
- HUD has been implemented and is almost fully functional

We have enough online clones already mate, are you sure you wanna dive into that ? Why don't you just focus on making something of your own as Offline but more enhanced than DOR we already have ?

I could lie here telling that i don't want to cheer you down on making a new Psever like the thousands we already have, but im not a lier, i'd rather be honest even if you're gonna hate me for that.

Old DOR devs which i remember names, you included never took it serious to keep up the work until yall run out of ideas or stamina. DOR was awesome, but uncontinued and anything which doesn't get updates gets to be boring eventually.

I understand why nobody puts faith in a offline game because there wouldnt bet enough income to compensate the effort. But, let's try to be a bit more open minded, how many offline games that you can play like a campaign are popular today ? making a research through that is worth the effort.

Anyway, for anyone who is looking for suggestions about how to enhance a offline version of DO and even be able to earn something out of it doing what you love, can just take a look at the few suggestions i've posted there a while ago:

Don't worry, I am planning on having two separate releases, an offline project, and an online one : many enjoy a solo game and have been asking for a solo version of 2008 / 2009 era, and I'm part of these people, I enjoy this project a lot and I don't care of making money or not, I'm a dev, and that helps training my algo skills alongside satisfaction to see it working as I intend !

Hey bro I'm excited you got an offline version of this. I cannot WAIT to try it out. If you have a discord channel, I would love to join it so I can see what's in store. Please keep up the good work. I'm also developing my own project but of course it will be online but I'll try to make it offline when I get done adding all the stuff I want. I will post my project on here for everyone to see from time to time
