If you enjoy the game then I'd recommend you buying a starter ship and playing from it.

Also, right now there are quite a few free bots, which will help you make a starter account a UFE beast!

I wouldn't recommend starting from scratch, Nowadays Darkorbit is much more expensive than the old days!
As already been said, If you consider buying an account, get one in GE1 or GA1.
The other servers are a bit empty at times, Still there are some good globals, but not as those two mentioned.
Anyway if you are going to start playing seriously you must spend a little money,
either for botting your way up, or buying an account, no matter how good it is.
Nowadays, you can't play without paying a penny like you did in the old days,
when there were still people playing together and killing npcs in the lowers
