Yes, threading an entire server with a 100mbit line with your home internet/computer is the wise decision. Your net was probably lagging so bad you thought your attack was sort of working.

DDOS doesn't necessarily have to take down the "entire" server. You can target any process you wish. People tend to hit the wrong spots, take down the whole server which consumes more resources than needed.

Servers can only handle so much from DDOS attacks before all their bandwidth is eaten up. Even with ddos protection hosting those guys only protect up to a certain amount. On top of that it's expensive. Of course that'd require one large botnet. Unless you meant something entirely different, lol.
