Well, isnt that the trick where u just change your itemtype.dat, then send it to the guy telling him "OMFGz00rz, you can see +1 and ELITES!!1!11!11", but it makes normals look like +1? Thats the only thing ive ever heard about scamming like that.
Its "difficult" because i doubt many ppl will take the file from you, and then buy a +1 from you. Mainly i doubt they would take the file from you :P lol, unless they are, well, "desperate".
