[Guide] How to Create a Private Server
Do not ask me about any of my pictures please. I put them in to add understanding to this thread. I don't have any personal gain by putting the images up except for the positive responses I get from helping people. Do not flame. Thank you.
You don't need gears to own- only a heart.
Yep, starting off with an image and a quote!
I'm back!
Hey everyone!
My name's Spirits ^^
Today, I'm going to reteach you all about making a server.
Even the great and awesome coders might not know this.
I hope you all benefit from it.
Good Luck =]
Article 1:
Setting up the Server
Download the Server from here:
Download the Client from here:
Then, follow .Arco's Guide to setting it up:

You can use this thread as a reference if you're not sure how to use it.
Don't be scared to ask for help!
People are jack***es all over the world.
Nothing will piss them off more than to give them no attention.
(credits: .Arco for helping me realize that.)
Article 2:
Power Control
Strength is the potential to control and overpower other people. If your server revolves around strength and power, it will die. My server, for example, is very hard to level in. It's hard to get money, levels, items... everyone is a noob, yet they say it's better than any other server they've been on and any other game for that matter. The reason is that I focus on senseless, fun activities rather than getting the characters as strong as possible in the least amount of time (article 3).
How to control your power:
This is the number one rule- the only GM and PM on the server is yourself. Need help handling events? Make the events automatically run by using
Also, don't kill your players. PKing players when you have unlimited powers is EXTREMELY disrespectful.
Seriously, this is what my character looks like:
You don't need gears to own- only a heart.
Article 3:
Economy
A server's economy can basically change the rules of the game. The first kind of economy is a Capitalist economy like the one TQ has created.
In a Capitalist economy, 50% of the server is middle class. Then, you get a huge spread with high outliers. These outliers are the extremely rich and the extremely poor noobs. TQ has made it so that one must purchase CPs for their character to become strong. This system has proven to be corrupt. Like small businesses being able to build military weapons, the characters have become weapons themselves. There must be government control to wipe out these rich outliers. Don't be like TQ: you will have many many unhappy players.
The next kind of server economy is a Market Economy. The market economy is used in the United States of America. Although it is possible to get the high rich class of players, everyone has an equal opportunity to become a high level player. With this system, however, you are subject to corruption. If everyone is a [GM], and everyone is the same at the end of the day, that isn't a Market Economy.
An economy where everything is the same with all players is called a centrally planned economy. This system of government is also known as Communism and Socialism. In this type of economy, CPs are literally given out for free. Everyone is the same. Everyone is a +12, full super millionaire. If everyone is the same, your server will have no incentive. Incentive is the driving passion to commit to something. Without incentive, your server will become boring and die.
No economy is pure Capitalist and pure Central in real life, so don't make your server pure. It will lead to corruption. Every economy has corruption until you have the respect and trust from your players to not misuse your GM powers.
Article 4:
Be Yourself Unless your Grammar Sucks.
Don't be like TQ!!
"Sorry that I am not sure about the HP either since I got killed there at once when I was there one time and then never go there, hehe."
Don't be like like- rofl - EVER.
If you have bad grammar then hire someone like me. I'll fix it for you.
The people that run TQ are morons. Don't try and copy their server perfectly (aka. Binaries)!
If you have a friend that has a private server where you get everything you want, does that make it right? NO.
If TQ adds something then does that make it right? NO.
If you add something does that make it right?
The answer is no.
Don't be afraid to be yourself, but look- if you make a mistake then suck it up. Admit you were wrong and change it. Nobody is perfect and it makes you imperfect if you think so.
Article 5:
Love and Friendship
There is one more factor that relates to game play. Without it, your game will become hell instead of somebody's safe dream. That factor is love. Without love, happiness, forgiveness, and friendship, your server will not be popular. Set an example for your players. Let them look up to you, but never look down on them.
Article 6:
Authority vs. Dictatorship
Nobody is perfect, you will hurt people. Everyone makes mistakes and sometimes it takes some maturing to play a server. I don't tolerate beta testers that use my errors in coding to their advantage. Make sure your players know your rules. As for me, I only have one rule...
Respect.
I'm not telling you all to go to your players and demand respect. You won't get it- that's a dictatorship. If you truly want the respect of your players then do the following:
1. Respect them. If you don't respect them then they'll hate you. It's called G. W. Bush. Don't tell your players that you're going to do something for them and end up f*ing them over.
2. Tell them how much the server means to you and how much it means to you that they're playing it. It's called gilt. They'll love you for creating the server and they won't take advantage of your errors / bugs because of gilt. They don't want to hurt someone so full of joy and who always knows what to say when they're depressed (according to my girlfriend... lol).
3. Have fun. Don't hack your way to the top, enjoy it with them.
Use your GM powers to put them in funny places where you'd never usually go.
You'll get this sooner or later and be able to log on! Just keep trying ^^
Also, make sure you back up your server! You don't want to lose it!
It will pay off when you see that your server is a happy, awesome place to play.
I have to admit, one of my players started to freak out when he couldn't pk since everyone was so nice- he got over it though and had the best time of maybe his life as he's fighting for the USA (my country) right now.
It's those kinds of experiences that make life a reward. Don't just help yourself by coding your own server, help someone else achieve in life... or maybe even save their life.
Don't be scared to know your players very well. Sometimes it's those bonds that makes a girl put the knife down and say "he gives me something to live for". You never know.
Have fun.
Good Luck.

Yeah. It does. It's easy to get rid of them though. Simply delete the item codes in items.txt in the database.

Yah, you can just edit the client... i got this far...
but the problem is the GUI.ini file.
You need to move the steed configuration coords...
and i'm not sure what code controls it.

Well it doesn't matter atm. My laptop (signature) is being fixed... I should have it back soon though. Then I'll move my private server onto the laptop and recreate that little window since I have to start over now.
You could probably find the code by installing a client that doesn't have the windows and then patching it up until it has windows. Then you could take the patch and install it in a folder, take the GUI.ini from the new patch and compare it to the client's right before you installed it.

This thread really isn't for article 1 but if you're following this guide then you must want to succeed in some way. Well what part are you stuck on? Did you change the directory inside the source to match with the location of the OldCODB folder?
