If you think 324$ is cheap, then right

Sharing opinions and discussing opinions is "bashing" these days? If you feel offended by my opinion or others than please do us all a favor and just leave this thread.

Back a few years ago when I ran a private wow server, I had some players ask me to make a donation page, I didn't want any donations for doing something I liked doing anyways, but about that time I had a stick of Ram go out on me(back in the day when a 1G stick costed you around $150)and at that time I could not afford to replace it, and the server was causeing alot of lagg with less memory. So I decided to create the donation page.
I didn't feel right taking someones money without giving them something in return for a service, like I said before, that I enjoyed doing anyways for free so, as my way of saying thank you for helping me, I made stuff like items with custom namesof thier choice to reward them with, nothing that would make the gameplay unbalanced, and made different levels of rewards so that the person who donated $5 gets less that the person who donated $20 so that the person who gave $20 wouldn't be like; "Hey, why does so and so have the same thing as me when they only gave $5 and i gave $20, thats not fair."
Also, I did make it very clear on the donation page the I was not wanting, needing, or require donations in order to keep the server running or how long I would be running it, I was doing that without donations, and that all donations would go towards improving the server so that everyone could have a better gameplay experience, which they did. When I got enough donations to get a new new stick of ram, it made everyone on the server happier because there was no more lagg.
Point is, not everyone is like "Pay me now to keep the server running, Make me rich" but asking for extreme amounts of money for special items is just crazy. And saying that donating will pay for coding and hosting and this or that is just another way of saying "Pay me now for something Im going to do anyway, with or without your money"

On top of that some servers have a minimum donation rate, which I find rather highly obnoxious!

Point is, they're selling things such as GM status for a month, PM status, shitload attribute points, plus million hp etc.
I am not against donating to private servers.. like, at all. Especially that people which are most often coding, are also paying for the servers which they're not even playing. I just don't get why do people think that owners of private servers should've code it properly, pay, to keep it online, and be on everytime to catch speeders or whatever, just to make bunch of idiots happy for 5 minutes.
And that's da biggest p servers problem nowadays. There is no compromise, community excepts everything,( i.e lagless ang bugless server, hackfree gameplay, custom edits, variety of features), and won't pay few bucks, to keep project alive, without a reward.

Staff rewards? In the few years that i've been around it was ran by volunteers who enjoyed the game, community and more. They want money now for moderating a forum or logging in every day and answer a few questions? lol

You donate if you think the staff deserves it, if you want one certain person to have it, sent it to him.
Seriously, I'm a huge fan of discussions, but this one fails.
Donating is voluntarily, you can't reach as much without money as you can with a little money. A small budget of 100$ makes the difference.

Thats the problem, most servers...their staff don't deserve being a staff member.. and you can do the same with 40 dollars what you can do with 100 dollars. If you really want to create a server, go outside mow/shovel for 20 dollars a house and with two houses you will be done.. think of that? we don't have to pay even if they deserve.. and they shouldn't stop if they do get paid.. now should they ? the only reason they should stop is because they can't do what they were doing in the first place to raise the money..

I'm yet to see this pointed out (then again I'm jumping into the discussion again) but in my opinion; and which I believe is a fact if not someone please correct me but, we're not even talking about donating anymore.
In my definition,
Donating is the act of sending money to a person and/or organization freely of cost and not receiving anything substantially beneficial from this act.
However, what people are talking about it donating for a GM, PM, items, etc.
While we may mask this with a prettier word as donating this is no better than what TQ does. It is selling yourself, and your server out it is the simple fact of selling in game merchandise not as we cover it up as, donating.

This is correct.
imagine donating to the Haiti Charity to help out with the earthquake relief. Do you really expect something in return? Of Course not, you are donating to the organiseation. The same applies to Private servers, you are donating to a project in which you can help them carry on, while you enjoy the benfits. It is entirely up to the people recieivng the benefits to return anything.

Actually you do expect something in return. You expect that the Haiti Charity goes toward the haiti people and that it does help them out. Translate into conquer... If you donate you expect that the money will go toward goodness and not just random things.
