Once they were out, you were FORCED to pay to play essentially, otherwise its useless.

This is what I was talking about - aiming for short term profit bursts, LOTS of "f2p" games do it. While its a flawed system from the game design perspective (in terms of fun), it works well financially because we make it work for them.
