You could expect maybe 50 players with a vps like that. If you want to be able to support hundreds of players, get a proper dedicated server.
The issue is not so much the machine stats but the fact that you're sharing that vps with tens to hundreds of other users. Any serious server that is hosting hundreds of players is using at LEAST a low to mid range dedicated server. You're probably looking at 100-150 USD per month for such a host.

1gig isn't that good but is also not the.bottleneck. I'd be more concerned with processor and connection sharing.
The fact is.. you will not be able to host hundreds, let alone 500 with any large success on a vps... Everyone I've talked to who has been hosting around 500 players is using a very powerful, dedicated server. If you wanna host like 50-100, go for. Medium end vps (30 Bux or so should do it) if you wanna host 200-300, then I'm sure a high end vps or low end dedicated will work just fine (100 Bux or so) but if you're looking for 500-700 then you best be willing to spend 200+ per month for hosting or you will be running into some issues. For that level of traffic you'll be wanting a gigabit line which depending on server location can add a few hundred per month just for the connection upgrade lol.

1gb is fine as long your source isn't ****. It should be able to hold hundreds on 1 gb ram or your source can be considered bad.
In case OP has a 5165 I'd say you won't get those 500 players...

The client yes, not necessary the server. A server takes no graphics.

With most online games, data is stored and updated in the server, not the client. So with a game like conquer, almost everything you do has to send a packet to the server, and most require you to receive one back as well. Just walking across the screen on one character is 5-12 packets. Now, if you have 10 people in screen who "see" you walking, those 5-12 packets become 50-120 packets just like that. Now you try running those numbers with up to 500 clients and see just how much data is going through at once.
I believe my old server had maybe 120-150 people online at once? To keep the ping reasonable I had to upgrade to a host that cost me around $180 per month, which offered me a dedicated machine. i.e. dedicated CPU, RAM, GPU, Internet, etc. The average ping for my players was around 30-150.

For that many players, a 1G line is almost required if you want their ping to stay "playable".
You're just a ******* because you get **** for cheaps xD
