There's no reason why multi shouldn't work anymore. The new patch didn't contain a new conquer.exe or other "core" files of the program. So your edited .exe file should still be there.
Maybe your client tried to autopatch when you tried to open the second (or more) one. It said something like "already one client open, can't autopatch" for me. In that case, close all your clients, let it autopatch, get a new itemtype.dat (or make it yourself) (there's a new one in that patch, containing this year's Halloween thingies) and have fun
