8(M + W) means (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white) + (maroon + white)

whatever is inside the (...) is a single horse so you combine a maroon with a white and thats the horse you need.
