I had the same problem at first, what you have to do is first backup conquer.exe from within the X:/Program Files/Conquer 2.0 folder, then in Ollydbg, work on the conquer.exe thats in the X:/Program Files/Conquer 2.0 folder, not the backup copy. Looks like it needed some of the *.dll's in there to de-compile (if thats the correct term) correctly.

Yes, you still have to start thru play.exe or the short-cut that points towards it. It doesn't bypass the autopatch.

That's one way to do it, but last time I tried changing the word "English" to something else with a hex editor, multi worked, BUT you no longer have the server time displayed. So you cannot post screenshots on the conquer forum because they can tell that you have modified the exe. This way is better because visually, you cannot tell the difference.
