Question regarding perm bans

How does Activision determine if someone historically ever used a cheating software? For example, let’s say I use X22 today in warzone but after today I never use it again. Then, six months from now if Activision updates their anti cheat they ban me for using X22 that one time. How do they determine that? How far back can they go?
