A collection of things as random as my mood and personality.
IP Blocks
How many of you have waited for a game to be released, had high hopes of playing it?
And then everything crashed due to one reason, the area you are living in is blocked by the game servers. Most MMO’s have IP blocks for players from certain regions. Like games that have their servers in North America block players from Europe. Some Korean games block players from North America and the circle continues. I’m going to discuss the main reasons of IP blocks.
• Competition:
This is the one of the main reasons of blocking players.
Example: (I’m going to use USA and EU as an example)
Let’s say a game has two servers, a European, and an American server (naturally there are two companies hosting the game).
Even though it’s the same game, the two companies want to make as much money as possible, and they don’t want the game from another region to get their players, so they establish IP blocks.
• Connection problems:
This is a fairly good reason to block people from other regions. At least some of you should know how server connections work, you send info, you get info. The bigger the distance, the longer you have to wait to get or send info. That creates latency (or lag, as most of us know it).
• License:
Game makers sell their game publishing license’s to companies called publishers, making money that way. Sometimes the license only allows publishers to release games in certain areas.
These are the basic three reasons that cause IP blocks. There may be more, but I only selected a few, because tried to “look” at it from the publisher’s point of view.
