A collection of things as random as my mood and personality.
Entry #1: What do we leave behind?
Posted 11/12/2012 at 18:08 by Vaidas B
Hey there! As promised, my first and hopefully not my last entry. I've decided to do these once a day, whenever I have the time or have something to talk about.
So, today was a rather dark and gloomy day, it is said that the weather can effect ones mood and way of thinking, so I guess that my thoughts about the end of ones days can be justified quite easily. I will try to represent them as best as I can, and hopefully, with practice, this will get easier. Sorry if it's a bit self centered, as I will be addressing myself, at least in this entry.
I was thinking about the metaphorical footprint that we leave behind. Will I be remembered or will I be forgotten as will be any average person of the world? I am no one great, I am just a single person in a world, where there are billions like me, I am not a scientist, nor am I a philosopher.
In real life, I am a student, and there is a good chance that I will be just like everyone else, an average job, an average life and the inevitable routine that seems to fall upon so many.
Yet, I am also an avid gamer, I have played so many games that my memory would fail me if I tried to recall them all and I will play that and much more for the rest of my days. I am also a member of a bunch of communities, hiding behind aliases like this one. Perhaps that is another footprint we leave? Maybe that's something we can do to be remembered? Maybe by taking part in something like a video game, I could influence something or perhaps change it in some way. I guess that's one way to do things. The internet is a big place after all, it's easier to find those who think alike, and it is certainly easier to grow as a person, perhaps not socially, but in refinement of ones knowledge and insights.
It also helps to think that everything that we say or do on the Internet is remembered, never forgotten and could always be found by those who seek the same opinions.
Let's take any MMORPG in existence, with a guild feature of course! In the early stages of online gaming, guilds were formed by those who wanted peers and people who shared a common interest. That is how you could find friends, you could talk to them freely, on subjects you would not dare discuss with anyone else. Sadly, not a lot of these friendships lasted if you quit the said game (with a few exceptions). So you are not likely to be remembered by person A or person Z, hence your contribution is small to none.
What do we leave behind in games and communities we abandon? We leave very little, to be honest, games tend to reach the peak of their popularity and then wither away until they are forgotten by all, but a few fans (to whom we are nothing). The same happens with communities, we leave our opinions, our view on the world and a crude representation of ourselves.
As with all things online, it is pretty much the same in real life, we look back at the past, struggle with the present and dream about a better future. Yet, like me, you may some day wonder about the same question and perhaps you will find your answer as I believe every person sees it differently and everyone's answer is unique.
I have not found my answer yet, so I can only end this with a question - What do we leave behind?
Thank you for your time,
