Game development and you

Posted 10/12/2010 at 16:52 by Vaidas B

What kind of impact do we leave on the “face” of an MMO when we play? I doubt it’s large on most games, one user out of thousands. But there are some that let us contribute to them, change them, or even make some basic decisions.
How many games do you know, that have a healthy playerbase, and their makers actually care about what players think? A lot of games are “standard”, the maker makes all the in-game content, and the publisher releases (sometimes makers and publishers can be the same people).

Of course some games have a really active playerbase that makes most of its in-game content. Games like “Roblox” let players fully express them selves. While graphics is the game’s weak point, content is not. Roblox has over 2 million player made levels! Players are allowed to fully express them selves, release their levels. Players use “Lego” avatars to use equipment like cars, guns or run around. The goal of the game is to play mini games or what ever the map maker wants you to do. Here’s a small screenshot of what players can do.

Another well known game is “TrackMania Nations Forever”, this is a “Formula 1” racing game. But it does not aim to be realistic, players can make their own levels however they like, they can add crazy sized jumps, speed boosts and a lot of other racing game components. If a player-made map is popular, it goes to the recommended selection list.

Player opinion is an important thing to every successful MMO. That is why a lot of games are being updated, changed, and based upon popular demands of their community’s. A lot of you should know “League of Legends”, “Battle of the Immortals”, and “Jade Dynasty” the developers of these games are open to the ideas of their players.

Conclusion: Everyone would like to change something in a game they play, sadly not every developer cares about players (or just doesn’t have the right to do that).
