Less than a year after the launch of its predecessor, Infinity Blade II is now available. While that's all well and good, not everything is going as smoothly as Chair Entertainment and Epic Games would like.
I, myself have gotten the game. I prefer the 1st version of the game but this one has its up and downs, like all of the other games.
While the game is already the top-grossing app on the App Store, thanks in part to its $7 price tag no doubt, an alarmingly-high number of users are complaining about the game crashing. The problem seems to be mostly (if not entirely) prevalent on the iPad 1 and certain models of the iPod Touch.
As of this writing the game has maintained an average of 4 1/2 stars on iTunes, thanks to more than 2,200 5-star reviews. Nearly 250 1-star reviews have also been published, many of which are complaining about the game crashing. Some can't open the game at all, others can't play for long before the game shuts itself down. Others yet are experiencing other bugs, including audio problems.
Epic boss Mark Rein has already taken to Twitter to promise a fix is on the way. "We discovered an issue with @InfinityBlade 2 that affects some users on iPad1 and iPod touch devices," he wrote a short time ago. "We're working to have a fix ASAP!" LOL
One has to wonder if the game's relatively short development cycle is partially to blame for these issues. Chair co-founder Donald Mustard told Gamasutra recently about the challenges they faced in having developed the game in six months and how they won't be doing that again. I dont think ther will be another sequel to behonest.
"I think in retrospect, having done it twice, that our development cycles are a little too short," Mustard said. "Not that the games are less polished because of it, but we're way more burnt out because, in order to make II feel the experience it needed to be, required way more crunching than is effective. It required for us, for the last two or three months, to just death march kill ourselves. I mean, guys are just working so many hours, doing so much, and that's not really good, I think, for the longevity of our studio."
Regardless, it's a shame the launch couldn't have gone smoother; besides the fact that it looks gorgeous, it is, by many accounts, a terrific game.
