I come back here occasionally and I am amazed how much has stayed the same since 2011. Most experienced people have left the game now so it hasn't really gone forward. The game was released in 2005 and it shows. Silkroad is one of kinds of games that needs to be full - when you see an empty server the cracks start showing how old the game and engine is. People criticise the servers, but the core reason they will always fail is the game is flawed and outdated.
Games nowadays, it’s all about the little details that make it a believable experience and help its replay value. Engines allow for more to exist in the game. As standards of other games go up our expectations are higher, so looking back at these older games they’re much more stale.
Everything is static – You sit in a town in Silkroad and there is nothing really going on. NPCs do not move, have little animation and all the structures are bland and flat.
Regions - These reflect the engines of the time and what they were capable of. There is lack of detail in things like floral or ground clutter. A lot of the zones are not diverse. For example a good amount of Donwhang looks the same, so this doesn't really promote exploration.
Sound effects – This really adds onto the ‘everything is static’ above. The NPCs don't have any kind of voice acting or promote any response when reacting with them. When in the city you’re really just left with the soundtrack going and occasional players buffing themselves.
Quests – There is little diversity to the quests, you are presented with a few quest types. If you played other games like WoW you will be amazed how much they add to the experience. This problem in itself is what makes the levelling process so tedious and offers little replay value.
Bots – The game is boring. So people bot. Pure and simple. A game is meant to be interacted with. People say about end game content etc. There is really nothing with this game so I don’t see the point of reaching level cap. Look at World of Warcraft, you have Battlegrounds, Capture the Flag, Arena (PvP), raiding (very unique boss fights and lore behind them), dungeons. Within PvP you can use honor points to buy levelling gear to help new characters level faster. It’s just lots of things like this that promote replay value.
People are trying to hold on to the original memories they had of the game, so they move from server to server.
In my opinion the way servers are now it’s not worth putting your investment into buying avatars or things that make your characters aesthetically nicer – then a server is shortly gone. I've stopped playing it now, but I would suggest to anyone to try World of Warcraft, although I think that game is reaching its stale point. Although it’s very friendly to newcomers now. Even in the standard game you have more content, when levelling you could have 5 different dungeons to choose from as an alternative to questing as well as large PvP battles, you simply just queue for these while questing. The levelling process for Silkroad can only be done so many times and you’re not really rewarded with different experiences from them, you literally have the choice between Europe or Chinese, WoW you have numerous different races / classes which all start off in different zones. I’m not selling WoW but using it as an example as it’s been out the same length of time as Silkroad and people still play the official server so I think it’s a good example to make.
I have always thought to myself about starting again as I think of those good memories, but most things I've pointed out in this post I look at and stop myself.
My main questions from this is: Why do people still play this? Are you trying to relive old memories? Have you explored other MMOs?

Nostalgia. Or at least the developers sprinkled some heroin magic voodoo all over the game.

Just checking up every few months to see if the source code (which I see a server has at the moment) or anything interesting leaks. This stuff still interests me. Don't really have the focus to commit to projects any more, even though it still interests me, as out partying to much between work!

Silkroad provides you an opportunity to become a badass all by yourself if you commit money and time (or bot) and with some luck you can make it to hall of fame even with limited amount of skills. It gives you the feeling of ownage and superpowers by feeding your ego.
If you are not a bright person on real life, and if you are a working individual, SRO provides you with this opportunity that you can buy the shinies , become a clan leader and rule the kiddies. Again it feeds your ego and it gives you what you don't have in real life.
Personally I think MMORPGs should be important subjects for psychology and sociology departments in universities.
WoW on the other hand, requires you to be much more talented in social skills to be accepted into a guild which is steady pushing through end game content. You simply need higher IQ and when success is there you will always know that it is a big team effort. We are not talking about Fortress wars in SRO where it is a desperate implementation of a hopeless duplication of items in other genre, alas a poor failure..
