No, he doesn't have to do it like that. Gold was not a problem at iSRO, assuming you were leveling up normally instead of getting plvl'd.

I've played on iSRO from the very day it was released, stopped playing when the 120 cap was introduced. You obviously couldn't afford **** like you do at private servers, but c'mon, that was the good thing there - you had to work for your stuff, and if you farmed a bit, the gold wasn't an issue, at least for me. The leveling process was so slow there so you didn't have to change your equipment so often, especially when on a gap.

Beside, paying for silk wasn't even a **** for low players. Mostly, paying for premium to login. that devil **** balbla was not necessary since you're already plvling your account . and I'm sure Haze was playing alone. I mean, he did not used plv taxies to get the job done. But it takes over a year for 85 character + with this method(from lv1)

played just like you , after i wasted 200~400$ in d12 alchemy i quit , and.. i playd and was the 2nd best rouge in tibet and the best wizz in rome at the same time. Even recently (well recently 3-4 years lol) played on Petra from when it opend and id sometimes remain out of gold in early levels , only above level 46ish it stabilized.
