pc question

So one of the pcs died the other week, giving an error at start-up
''Black screen and says Select proper boot device then restart ...''

But thats bullshit, cause its already set to boot from the hard drive. Even after a windows reinstall, the same error occurs.

I payed once to have it fixed, the guy said the partitions turned into Linux over night (dont ask how, i have no clue), anyway he fixed it, and a week after same error again.

If any of you know how this error can be fixed at home, please post.

AND NOW: I dont wanna pay again to fixed cause its an old pc (only way ill fix it is if i can do it myself), so I've been trying to find a cheap pc that would allow me to play sro, more then 5 clients, and edit in sony vegas at the same time.

Got like 4 choices, Ima put them below, say which one you think is best for my needs with some feedback, no point posting if you have no clue (there is enough one person here that isnt sure what to get, me).

I guess C.

Processors in all of them could be better tho..

As for you current problem, I'm guesing that your HDD crashed.. Installing a new windows on it might work, if not try a different HDD.

Yea thing is that a better CPU then those costs way too much, with xmas coming and all i got way too many expenses, so I wanted to keep a bugget of 500 euro for the pc. Normaly i wanted this :
Quote:
Acer Aspire X3900 i3-530 8GB/1TB HD5570-1GB
* Intel® Core(TM) i3-530 Prozessor (2,93 GHz, 4MB shared L3 Cache)
* ATI® Radeon(TM) HD 5570 1024MB DDR3
* 4x 2GB DDR3-1333 Arbeitsspeicher
* 1000GB S-ATA Festplatte
* 16x DVD-SuperMulti Double Layer

* 18-in-1 Card-Reader (MMC, MMCplus, SD, MS, MS Pro, xD, usw.)
* 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN
* Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
* Abmessungen: 100(W) x 352(D) x 256(H)

But this costs 700, and thats too much for the moment.
As for my old pc.
Tried 3 different windows, same result.
And dunno, the HDD aint busted so the proffesional check said, he was able to fix the error last time, said all he had to do was delete the partitions where linux appeared, I've done the same thing now, yet did not get the same result he got.

Seems like the order gets mixed up. It's like trying to boot up the master as primary which has no OS on it.
How many hdd's do you have installed, and are they SATA, IDE?

Its 1 HDD of 160 GB SATA made by Maxtor.
Normaly its partioned in 3 parts, but now ive even tried just 1 partition to avoid those linux appearing, yet didnt work.

PS:I have no clue how to or if i can switch from Master to Slave, if that is the issue.

Those rankings could be changed with those lil jumpers on the back off your HDD (there is mostly also a little hint or picture/guide which to pull and which ones to pull in of those jumpers to change from MA to SL) but i guess you knew this anyway already ..

what does GHz and MB signify in this case?

Intel® GMA X4500 up to 1024MB <------- what does this mean .. is it memory?
* 4GB DDR3 Arbeitsspeicher <---- is this processor again? so you have 2 processor?
* 500GB SATA Festplatte <---- dont understand.
Are they in germany?

On the appearance, both DDR3 and DDR2 use 240 pins and you can hardly see any differences between them. The only difference is the position of the key notch that prevents users from inserting the wrong type of RAM into their motherboards. The shift in the position of the key notch also means that DDR3 is not compatible with DDR2 and a separate DIMM slot has to be used.
Other than the difference in key notch position, DDR3 RAM is also due to run at a higher frequency than DDR2 RAM.
In more human words, ddr3 is faster than ddr2 ( has higher transfer speed).

Thanks. Didn't really know, not a pc profi. All i know about pcs is self-learned, but it gets me where i need to go most of the times.

Tending for option C now cause of the HDD (sony vegas work needs a lot of space), althought B has a bigger one, its having lesser rotations, so reads slower. Also at B its an AMD processor, thats a turn off for me, never works at how much it says it does.

Start collecting cash people, around 200 plus my 500 then ill buy then one with 700 :P .

Have you ever considered building the PC by yourself instead of buying one from the store? Seems to me that you know a thing or two about PC's, and should be a problem.

You could get a similar pc as the ABCD's for 300-400Euro.

Took a look last night in a local pc shop here, came up with this:

Quote:
*MidiTower 420W Pro-915B / black € 35,80
Power suply i got one, almost new, used 3 weeks.
*Mainboard 775 I-P965 P5B-DE (F/16x/DDR2) € 41,50
*CPU775 Pentium Dual Core 3.06GHz (E6600)/2MB/1066/Box € 81,00
*CPU Cooler LGA-LP1 REV.2 € 8,30
*RAM DDR2-800 2GB/CL6/PC2-6400 2 x 38,40
Plus my 3GB DDR2 so 7 GB total, mainboard supports 8GB max.
Video card i also have : VGA PCI-16x NVGF210-512P MSI VN210-MD512H (HDMI/DVI) works at 1024 MB.
*CardReader int 30in1 USB 2.0 3,5 Procyon 1.5 / BULK € 8,00
*DVD-Writter SATA 22x GH22NS50 BareBulk black € 18,10
*HDD SATA2 500GB 7200 ST3500418AS 16MB € 41,80
Screen ill use an 19'' LCD from LG, pretty old, but works good.
All the things i gotta buy cost 312 euros, plus the lil cables of course. I guess all in all around 350, for the all the work.

Its clear its not something special, but it should do the job with 8 clients + sony vegas rendering.
The new intel processors cost just too much, thats why I've choosen just a dual core (anyway it should be better than the old one that was Intel Pentium 3Ghz).

I'm guessing you're refering to Phenom from AMD, i looked at that too, but quadcore is like 180 euros. From 80€ to 180€ for a CPU thats a big jump.

As far as i know, it either is a quadcore or its not. There is no ''making a quadcore'' out of something else.
