Imo Goldwaste, and if he is new, he wont make it far with large pots since they aint cheap at all ..
I did fine with protectors, but also i have to say that i skilled main fire .. used Protector till beginning 8D last 7D gear, and kept it till 2nd tear 9D and changed back to protector.
Btw, if he got only NPC items, its nothing special that he dies with his NPC parts on mobs around his lvl .. so till if he can afford a +3 set, he can still lvl on mobs 3-4 lvls under his lvl .. the difference aint that much .. and if he kills easier and faster he will waste less pots, kill faster and drop more items
