Appropiate Budget for Server & Website Hosting

Unfortunately I never found a answer to that question above and since I am starting to work on my own server now this is one of the vital things I need to clarify. Costs obviously vary as I noticed these days when I did a research on a appropiate VPS. I found pretty decent ones and from what I feel like the specs should be more than enough.

This thread is mainly directed towards (ex-)server owners who might could give some insight on these costs (How they were at the start and how they may have developed throughout the server's lifetime)

Right now I am thinking of a budget like 100-200$ for each month when the server and the website goes online. Is that realistic or too less?

I greatly appreciate any answer.

I paid 85 tops for my servers, had full protection, and shaiya doesn't need so much space really it just depends on if you are developing the files and content on your home pc, or on the dedicated but developing on the host is a waste of money when you simply can do it for cheap on your own pc doing the files then moving it to a 80$ dedicated machine which has ddos protection.

yeah right make it fully done on your desktop then move it after its done and others will just follow website etc or if you want purchase a vps worth less than 20$ and you can do what ever you want for it just for testing if you dont wanted to do test server on your CPU

for my project i pay around $75 a month for web hosting SSL DDos protection and unlimited bandwidth

Depending on how many players your looking to have use your server and what level ddos protection and website costs etc. a budget of 250.00 a month is realistic. Don't forget to add in additional funds to buy scripts and upgrades from DEvs like Juuf and etc.

And as stated above build and develop the server on your personal pc. just make sure to use the same SQL server aka 2008R2 or 2012 on your pc as the host to avoid issues. I recommend 2012.

Well 2008r2 is getting a bit old, and 2012 has some improvements on how it executes the data. Personally I use 2014 and have my own version of fixed Server files or it.

There is certainly nothing wrong with 2008r2 I find it does work better on older slower pc's and laptops.

There are a couple of reasons why would you use Windows Server 2012 rather than 2008.

1. Handles better the connections
2. Uses less resources
3. The server manager is much easier to use
4. Uses SMB 3.0 which adds a better performance to SQL
5. Dynamic Access Control (DAC) better security
6. DirectAccess without the hassle factor
7. Comes with ReFS file system which improves the performance of your HDD, reads faster without the need of SSD.
these are only a couple, there are much more improvements.

I would suggest to try Sharktech maybe?!

I would like to know more about them too, i haven't tried their services yet but a couple of friends gave me good feedback.

So you would spend that much per month, waste your money when that money can be put into development instead to make your server great? Hmm seems like a tragedy to waste that much money on something that a private server doesn't require.

50 to 60 or so USD a month is fine for a starter server I wouldnt spend much more then that until you know how well your server will take with the people playing it lots of people have tried, failed, and or gave up because of lots of reason.

And I agree with lightning and treica sql 2012 and 2014 is a lot better then older versions in a lot of ways but I guess it all boils down to personal pref. and compatibility.

but on a side note I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a server until you know what your getting yourself into and how people will like it. and the over all cost can get quite big I usually pay for ads for the first month or so and scripts that I cant do myself and some of these things can start adding up to a good bit so pace your self and figure out what your server is worth before going all in.

I was pointing out to plan ahead in costs, save up some extra capital to fund your project if necessary. Its idiotic to think omg im gonna open this killer server and its only going to cost me 50 a month max, so something happens and the server goes under because your strapped for cash or you didnt plan ahead.

So yeah Tyler i like to have a financial cushion for everything i do.

or you could invest in fiber 1 gig connection invest in a server pc or rack server i currantly have a power edge 950 running on a 1 gig fiber connection costs me 80$ a month for the connection the rack server cost me about 250-300$ got it second hand from a web hosting compony off TradeMe . that is unlimited has full protection advantages dosent cost you to much extra for hosting the server in the long run means u can controll wha you have on the server pc aka the MSSQL the OS what extra protection you use i find hosting from home is much more easy and means if anything goes rong with the server im right here to fix it =)
