you are on W8 32 or 65 bits ?

Because you have to Download SQL server for 32 or 64 bits

I'm running a private server for testing purposes on my laptop, which runs Windows 8.1. I'm using MSSQL 2008 R2 and it works fine.

2005 isnt that great, i would try a newer version like 2008 or 2012.

Get SQL server 2012 from microsoft for free.

Be sure to get the right version whither 32 or 64 bit and get 2012 express and sql management studio.

If you are making an EP4 server, SQL 2008 Express is what you want.

I had this problem using SQL 2005 on WinServ2012 on a VM on my pc. I tried using SQL2008 and it worked seamlessly.
