in order to display the toon, the game loads only the basic graphic files (gear & weapons), so having the login page mean that item.sdata (& .mlt, .itm) are safe.
when you load a toon, it loads skills, map, and other data, if one of these files is corrupted - or invalid against changes made on server, such as skills present in skills.sdata but no longer defined at server side - the game crashes.
so you likely have an issue in your data.saf
(server errors are also possible but you didn't indicate if you checked the logs).
