the DDS used by effects are stored in .\Effect\DDS folder, and this is not a surprise.
you are so certainly not looking for a .DDS file but for a visual effect that can not be understood with a single .DDS file; and indeed effects involve several parameters, including color, it is not always in DDS; the DDS image can define a white shape later colorized with a color defined in the effect itself (in the .EFT file)).
then there is several ways to apply effect:
- with enchantment, the client automatically apply an effect to a specific weapon
- with model parameters: a weapon model consists in a DDS filename, a .3DO filename, a 3D point, a color (for alpha mask) and a glow index. that index accepts 4 values: -1 for no effect, 0 for blue, 1 for red, 2 for green, 3 for white. Glow effects defined by this parameter of the model are used by pre-elementarized weapon and by top grade weapons (legendary for low level, goddess for high level).
- with the ReqRec field of the weapon type (the record in item.sdata describing the weapon), if not null this parameter designates the index of an effect listed in effect/weapons.seff; each oentry within this file designates an effect (.EFT file) which in turn references several .3DO & .DDS files as well as positions, delay, sequences, ..., lot of things.
attached is a dump of the current weapons.seff files, you will note that effects #91 to #160 (ReqRec 92 to 191) are not defined (filled with 00s) and won't provide any visual effect, all other values can be used in ReqRec field to obtain a specific effect.
Also if you know an effect by its index, you will find the names of the used .DDS and so you'll known which ones could be changed (knowning that they are in the Effect\DDS folder).
