A lot of times if you restart the manager and can not connect, the service may have been shut down. Check in Start Menu>All Programs>MS SQL Server 2005/2008>Configuration Tools>SQL Server Config Manager

You will see a spot that lists off SQL Browser, Full text search, SQL Server

Make sure SQL Server is green. If not, right click and start

I honestly do not remember the exact error, it has been a long while since I have gotten it, but I figured I would list the solution anyway in case it is the same error. If not, my apologies for consuming your time =)
