If you are super new to PoE, didn't even played the beta. The following are some tips or tricks give to a beginner of this game. In fact, do what feels right to you. Following guides and data figures on this game is going to ruin the experience for you the first time around.
When you find a new orb, read it and use the wiki to understand better what it does. When you come across a new skill gem or support gem you can also use the wiki to figure out more.
But to really experience the game, just do it naturally. You should get extremely far in the story on nearly any kind of build with how things are right now.
The only things I will say to avoid just so you don't frustrate yourself to no end:
1. Try to focus on one type of defensive mechanic. Building Energy shield, armor, and evasion all at once is going to be bothersome.
2. Don't focus on poison, bleed, or ignite damage. You can have them as bonuses but building around them can be wasteful when you don't know what you are doing.
3. There are very few cases where mixing physical and elemental damage work, and will require a deeper understanding of the game. Try to focus on one of them. Something that adds bonus of your physical damage, or converts your physical damage will always be boosted by base physical damage due to the conversion. Where as, if you have 50% of physical to cold, cold boosts will only help half your damage.
4. Despite what others may say, have fun with your currency. As long as it isn't an exalted orb, or a mirror. Learning the game comes from using things.
Expect your first toon to fail, don't imagine you are going to get to end game in one go. But if you follow guides and worry about damage numbers you aren't going to take in the game, it's lore, the experience quite as well. Wait til your second character to min-max.
