Introduction:
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, this is a way of communicating with other users accross an IRC Server, as well as being able to perform other features such as the sharing of files (This depends on your IRC Client). Throughout this tutorial the IRC client we will be using is mIRC, this is because it is by far the most popular IRC client,supports the most features, is the most compatable (as the majority of IRC users use mIRC), and is easy to use. If you do not allready have a copy you can get mIRC from and it is totally free of charge (although if you would like to help out the developers you can register the software for a small fee).

Once mIRC has been installed we begin the by opening the application, this can be done via the startmenu, shortcut icons etc. When you open mIRC you will be greeted with an options dialog box (you may also get an about page, to stop this appearing in the future simply untick the box in the bottom left corner) as shown below:

The initial page of this dialog box allows us to specify our Nickname (as it will appear when you are on IRC), a backup nickname (incase you name is taken by another user), also information such as email address (although you can just make this up if you wish). At the top of the dialog you can see the servers dropdown, this doesn't matter at this point and you can leave the server as the default value. When your nickname has been set click "OK" to continue. Once the options have been set the Status screen will be bought into focus, in the text box at the bottom of the screen we can issue commands to the application.

Steps to connect to IRC Server:

To begin connecting to a server you must first find out its name, in this case the server is called mIRCX. Each IRC Server has multiple servers (so that if one goes down the other will hopefully be there as backup), the most common mIRCX servers are below:

irc.rizon.net:7000
irc.rizon.net:6667

(Note: The numbers following the : are the port on which your computer connects to the server, default being 6667)

Now that our server is clear (for this example I will use irc.rizon.net as our server) we can make a connecting. To do this we issue the command "/server" followed by the server name, so:

/server irc.rizon.net

(Note: The :6667 is not necissary here since its the default IRC server port, however if using any other port such as 6665 it must be typed)

When your client starts to connect to the server you will recieve several lines of text on the status page, dont worry this is normal and is just information from the server itself such as their disclaimer. Below is an example of what it will look like once your connection is complete:

In the example above we can see the text "-Services.rizon.net- If this is your nickname, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY ", this is because I have registered my nick "Dark3ness" with mIRCX meaning that only I may use the nickname, also it allows me to gain extra privelidges such as access levels in channels, this will be talked more about later. The orange text is the results of my notify list, when connected I will be told which memebrs of my notify list are online (In this case "ser_2703" and the mIRCX services).
To add a user to your notify list type "/notify <nickname of user you want to add>" (Btw dont acctually type the <> bits :P)

Joining the Room (Channel):

The next step after connecting to IRC is to join a channel (this is just the name for a chat room). To do this we issue the "/join" command (This can also be shortened to just "/j") followed by the channel name.
Channel names begin with a # symbol followed by the name, ours being #animehq . Therefore to join AnimeHQ's room we type:

/join #animehq

Now that we have joined a channel a new window will appear (along with a tab on the menu bar), at the bottom of the window is a text box where we can type messages to other users in the channel (The primary use IRC was designed for) as well as issue commands to the channel (Note: / commands can be issued from any window). Along the right hand side of this new window is the nick list, if you should wish to message a user privately simply double click their name and a new chat window will appear (alternativly issue the command "/query <their nick>")

Registering Your Nick:

To make sure that another user cannot take your Nickname you can register it with the IRC server (this counts only for mIRCX, any other servers you will have to register with seperately). The process of registering you Nickname is simply and requires the user of one command which is as follows:

/msg nickserv register <password>;

So say for example I was currently using the nickname Darkness and wanted no one else to use it (assuming it wasn't allready registered by another user) and wanted the pass "abc753", I would type the following:

/mgs nickserv register abc753

(Note: Nickserv will register the password to the Nickname you are currently using, this means it doesn't have to be specified when issuing the command)

When you reconnect to the IRC server you can authenticate that the Nickname is yours by typing:

/mgs nickserv identify <password>;

Thats about it for now !!, in the next tutorials you can find out how to download files via IRC using Fserves and XDCC bots, and also how to use some more advanced features (although IRC is pretty simple so they are not really advanced :P).
