y = u+v. Wegen y³ = (u+v)³ = u³ + 3u²v + 3uv² + v³ = u³ + 3uv(u+v) + v³ ist also y³ = 3uvy + (u³+v³) = -ay-b. Ein Vergleich der Koeffizienten liefert die Gleichung (I) 3uv = -a und die Gleichung (II) u³+v³ = -b. Aus Gleichung I folgt: v = -a/3u, und in II eingesetzt ergibt das: u³ - a³/27u³ + b = 0 ⇒ u6 + bu³ - a³/27 = 0. Mit ´:= u³ erhalten wir daraus: ´² + b·´ - a³/27 = 0. Die ´-Lösungen lauten also: -b/2 ± √b²/4 + a³/27 , und u hat somit die Lösungen: (-b/2 ± √b²/4 + a³/27)1/3. Natürlich ist v von gleicher Gestalt, aber wegen u³ + v³ = -b müssen die Vorzeichen der beiden Quadratwurzeln verschieden sein. Damit haben wir bereits die Cardanische Formel: y = u + v = (-b/2 + √b²/4 + a³/27)1/3 + (-b/2 - √b²/4 + a³/27)1/3 Falls die Diskriminante D:= b²/4 + a³/27 positiv ist, existieren drei verschiedene y-Lösungen, wobei die einzige reelle Lösung direkt an der obigen Formel abzulesen ist. Im Falle D = 0 gibt es nur reelle Lösungen, von denen mindestens zwei gleich sind - wenn a = b = 0 ist, sind sogar alle drei Lösungen gleich. Für D < 0 existieren drei verschiedene reelle Lösungen, die aber i.A. nicht durch reelle Radikale darstellbar sind (Casus irreducibilis).
