Depends on the O.S.

If it's windows 7 you should try the following...

AVG
AVAST
MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS

If it's windows 8 or 8.1 both o.s's have a DEFAULT antivirus installed. It's called "Windows Defender" and there are plenty of tutorials on how to make windows defender as your active antivirus. I even know a certain "pony" that taught me this and windows defender has been working ever since.

For every smart person, I can recommend Microsoft Security Essentials aka. Windows Defender.
It's not using much RAM or CPU and like I said, for every smart person it's totally enough.

In my opinion, you don't need any AV. If you have adblock and don't download any malicious software from websites like "freekeygen*insert-game-name-here*.blogspot.com" and yeah...you know.

I also like NoScript. Not an Anti-Virus, but it helps.

At least it was the worst in all tests made by famous magazines. However, I'm also not using an AV on my private PC.

That's just for not executing (malicious) javascript code on a website.

I've been using it for a while and always it annoyed me, when I downloaded malware on purpose

Well, that's how an AV should react though.

Tried to configure GitLab for about 2 hours yesterday, gave that up after 2 wipes because sshd did not start after reboot. Although there is a really good documentation for installation I didn't manage to install it yet. I may retry later... :/

Because it is. Watch the reviews + I had about 3 viruses on my old PC because of this "good program".

Windows Defender versagt erneut

Der in Windows 8.1 eingebaute Windows Defender setzt auf die Technik der separat erhältlichen Microsoft Security Essentials. Die schnitten in vergangenen Tests unter Windows 7 und XP bereits sehr schlecht ab und machen unter Windows 8.1 keinen besseren Eindruck: Der Windows Defender in Version 4.3 erreicht lediglich 11 von 18 möglichen Punkten und landet somit auf dem fünftletzten Platz.

Von den namhaften Gratis-Scanner schneiden nur AVG Anti-Virus und die Microsoft Security Essentials schlechter ab: Während AVG mit 3,5 Punkten in der Schutzwirkung noch vor Avast liegt und nur, erreichen die Security Essentials hier schon wieder nur 0 Punkte.

Basissicherheit ist besser als nichts, hat sich Microsoft wohl bei den Security Essentials gedacht. Dementsprechend können uns die Erkennungsraten im Test nicht überzeugen. Von dem geprüften Malware-Zoo erkennt das Programm 96,46 Prozent. Zwar ein guter Wert, da der Zoo viele Schädlinge umfasst, die nicht aktiv im Umlauf sind. Im gesamten Testfeld ist dies dennoch der schlechteste Wert. Auch bei der Erkennung der Betrugssoftware belegen die Essentials den letzten Platz, da sie lediglich 92,4 Prozent der getesteten Anwendungen bemängeln.
