whats ticking?

u know in CE, Templar, serbio, those cheat engines... i know how to use them excep 4 one thing... ticking the hacks... i know its the e-ziest thing to do, but i never knew how to do it. after all the guides i went through to hack, none of them mention the term "tick" im so pised that i dont know what ticking means! can somone tell me
