As a ex-ADC who went to the support role and it is still my main one, the most important thing is to trade wisely and do not go ***** deep with expecting your adc to follow you. Usually, i always suggets the bot role to be played with a buddy in raidcall/skype/etc so you can talk freely. Otherwise, if you are soloing, try to counter-ward while placing either pink or just a ward next to their. Try to be on one line and following his moves while at the same time paying attention to the map. Play "safe picks". Knowing what is viable right now and not, is important for every role! Try to pick some support who will synchonize with your adc. Have at least a few supports to choose from. Ranged and non-ranged.
And for f*ck sake, do not stay behind your *** **** adc`s back. I swear to 300 angels, i always hated my support to stay behind me like a scaredy cat. Keep up with him, synchonize the attacks with pinging and always be sure he knows what you are going to do. There is nothing worse seeing support going wild as a russian bear running forward and die like a n00b.
Cheers! ^^
