CURRENTLY IGN: Silphi Reborn
Hey guys! I am Silphi (IGN: Cynthias Cat) from EUW and I am here to show you the ways of getting free el... I mean playing Rengar JG! I hope this helps =)
A little information about myself:
I started playing LoL since S1.
I have mained Rengar since his nerfs before the rework (Yes, Rengar had a rework!).
I have been Challenger since S3.
I was top 50 in S4 ().
I am currently #100 in Solo Queue ().
I am a top lane main.
Why am I writing a JG Rengar guide and not a top Rengar guide? The answer is simple. Rengar JG is less punishing and can get you free elo.
Anyways, let’s start!
Pre-Game Preparation:
Why do I think Rengar JG is free elo?
Unlike in S5, in S6 Rengar can get LVL 6 faster because of the new JG items. Moreover, Rengar now has higher sustain because one can use potions 24/7. This is a buff to Rengar because his strength as a JG lies in his ability to LVL 6 gank.
Assassins got buffed so it is much easier to get flat Armor Pen due to Masteries and new items
Adding Thunderlord’s for some great burst will have us good to go! (Side Note: Thunderlord’s is especially good for assassins since most squishy champions will not build much Magic Resist. We also get some Magic Pen from the masteries)
Runes:
Do keep in mind that Armor Pen is like scaling AD!
Setup 1:
4x Armor Pen and 5x AD Marks
9x Armor Seals
9x Flat CDR Glyphs
3x AD Quints
Total Stats:
This rune page should be well known by Lee Sin players but once in a while I take it for Rengar too. It’s a good rune page that gives you a good camp clear so that you can get LVL 6 faster. This page makes your pre-6 ganks stronger and also provides some CDR which is essential for Rengar.
I recommend this rune page for when your team needs time to scale up and you know they will carry you when late game arrives. This is a strong early game rune page. Also, if you are new to Rengar JG start with this page as it's good for beginners.
Setup 2:
9x Armor Pen Marks
9x Armor Seals
9x Flat CDR Glyphs
3x Armor Pen Quints
Total Stats:
This is my solo carry rune page. There is A LOT of armor pen so you can pretty much deal true DMG to squishy champions with this setup and some items. However, this page will make your pre-6 super weak! Your camp clear will be slower and your 1v1 could suffer but the reward is huge if you do well pre-6.
I recommend this rune page for advanced Rengar players or those who want to enjoy the huge salt you get by bringing somebody down from 100 to 0. Do keep in mind that if you fall behind early (Due to counter jungling), you can get punished heavily for using this setup.
Masteries:
Cunning is the BEST F*&#@% TREE EVER. It gives assassins everything they need: DMG, DMG, armor pen, DMG and some more DMG.
Why not 6/18/6 (For Tough Skin)? If you take my route/build path you will not face issues in the JG even if you run armor pen runes.
Some Explanations:
Ferocity tier 4: Bounty Hunter vs. Oppressor
Pick oppressor if you want safe DMG. You can get E DMG every time. If you are bad with skill shots, do not worry since there are tricks for the E ability. I prefer Bounty Hunter because I know I can kill at least 3 people to get more DMG therefore, I do not rely on CC for the 2.5% bonus DMG.
Cunning tier 2: Runic Affinity vs. Assassins
Runic Affinity can be quite good but having 1.5% more DMG when solo fits more. The more DMG I have the more tanky they will need to be. You could argue that as a JG you won't get the DMG increase but there are a lot of scenarios where you will 1v1 and have that edge in those fights.
Side note: I am not quite sure, but I think the mastery also increases the DMG you deal against monsters.
Cunning tier 5: Precision vs. Intelligence
People's opinions vary but I will make summarize the opinions here. Take Precision if you want to kill efficiently and take Intelligence if you want to gank more often.
I recommend taking Precision as it's pretty overpowered this patch. It has great synergy with these runes and build and also increases the DMG of Thunderlord's!
Skill Order:
Q > W > E for the first 3 LVLs. You could take E LVLs 2 if you want to counter JG however, I do not recommend doing this.
Max Order:
R > Q > E > W
We want to assassinate people so we take Q first for our main source of DMG. We max E afterwards as it deals physical DMG and we get a stronger slow for every point put in it.
Tips and Tricks for Rengar's Abilities:
Savagery (Q):
Your Q is an auto attack reset. Do an auto attack and then press Q right after for a "fast auto attack combo." You can double jump with your Q! Jump on something which is in a brush, press Q and then target something which is out of the bush. This works because it's an auto attack reset.
Battle Roar (W):
Sadly, there aren't any tricks for W from what I know. :/
Bola Strike (E):
There are tricks but there are no official names. I call them "Midair Bola", "Melee Midair Bola" and "Madlife Bola." I cannot record right now so I will try to explain these techniques with this old video (It's in German):
In case you do not want to listen to German or you don't understand through the video, here are the steps:
Midair Bola:
Throw the bola while the air. This allows us to cancel the animation so it's much easier to hit. How to pull it off? Press E while midair.
Melee Midair Bola:
Throw the bola while midair but this time in front of your enemy. It gives the target no chance to dodge it unless your target is jumping/flashing away. Here I try to explain it: . Since I am in front of the enemy, my bola will hit the target not in a line but more like in a cone. This allows us to pull off the "Madlife Bola"
Madlife Bola:
Once you learn how the Melee Midair Bola works you can pull this trick off. You learned before that the Melee Midair Bola allows you to hit the bola in a cone. This means you can predict where the target will flash as long as you predict him flashing/jumping somewhere in this cone range you will hit him even if your target does not try to flash/jump away. Hopefully I could explain it to you. T_T
Thrill of the Hunt (R):
The most unknown technique (In my opinion) is the double jump with R. Here is a video where you can see the technique (It's in German): How does it work? Jump on a target and then immediately press R. You can immediately jump to another target!
How do I profit from this trick? Sometimes, I engage on target with this trick like ranged champs or champs who use CC. We can take Jax as an example. Usually when Rengar jumps on a target, the target will use any kind of CC or disengage spells as soon as possible so I jump on the target (I can do my DMG combo midair) and go invisible as soon as possible. In the Jax example, he will press E but cannot shit on me because I am invisible after the stealth and can re-engage and kill him... Unless he has Rageblade x)
Oh and you can put down wards and use Ghostblade while in stealth!
Ferocity Usage:
Teaching how to use ferocity abilities is a bit hard since a lot of it depends on items and situations. However, here is some advice:
Ferocity E has awesome base DMG. Snare is super effective against squishy targets. The most common mistake is going for the Ferocity Q. I use Ferocity E 90% of the time. If you are scared to miss it then read the section fo this guide with the "Melee Midair Bola" and "Madlife Bola"
Ferocity Q is good if you want to go for consistent DMG. It gives you an AD and AS steroid. I recommend going for the Ferocity Q if you have Ghostblade and your target has no chance to jump over a wall. If your target can jump somewhere else it doesn't matter as you can easily chase with E slow, movement speed from ult and Ghostblade. If your target has a chance to jump over a wall, it's best to go for Ferocity E.
Ferocity W is great if you need the heal and tankyness from it.
Core Item Build Order:
Start: Hunter's Machete + 3 potions
First Base Onward: Hunter's Talisman, CDR boots/Mobility Boots, Caulfield's Warhammer, Skirmisher's Sabre, Warrior Enchantment, Yoummu's Ghostblade (Buy Serrated Dirk first), Another Serrated Dirk
This build is ALWAYS what I go for as my core items. It gives a lot of CDR + Armor Pen. The build path is cheap and super effective (By cheap, I mean the components)
Why Skirmisher's Sabre and Stalker's Blade?
Rengar Rule Number 1: Kill or get killed. Skirmisher's Sabre gives me extra DMG and DMG reduction in a 1v1, especially with all of these disgusting Brand supports (We know they do more DMG than every other support). I am glad to have it since players won't have the time to run if we execute the combo perfectly so either they fight back or they die. Of course, you can take Stalker's Blade if it fits your play style better.
Why do you build JG items so late? I need mobility from boots early. I do not need red smite that early since with early boots we can gank better (Will show later).
Late Game Build (No order):
Skirmisher's Sabre + Warrior Enchant
Tri Force
Malmortius
Ghostblade
Hydra
Boots
This build has CDR, armor Pen, AD and mobility.
WHY NOT THE CRIT BUILD? Crit builds are bad (IMO). The build path requires more items to be effective and it's RNG (If you like RNG go play ADC or Hearthstone). Also, games tend to end before I can even get a full build so I'd rather stack cheap armor pen and torture ADCs
Possible Items:
QSS: No thanks. Don't build this.
BT: Sustain with Hydra. The AOE damage of Hydra gives you the shield from BT
If you want tankyness, BT is your choice but remember: KILL OR GET KILLED.
Summoner Spells:
Take flash and smite please x)
