If it's one thing all community users should be aware of is that to
always run antivirus protection when playing on private servers, regardless of the game. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a PSA on here or on any other big private server communities regarding the issue. You can play a server and everything could be fine. Hell it could be the best server that ever existed for that particular game. Although server owners can be just as shady as the rest of us and all it takes is one "patch" to infect thousands of players simultaneously. If you're one of them "nah, it wont happen to me" then grasp these words. I among other users here on EPvP have had or do have background in
black hat related activities. The one thing that most people overlook when it comes to malicious code is expectation. You will never see it coming until it's too late. Those of us with the skill set to manually break down compiled software to check for anything malicious will all tell you the same thing. It takes way too long to manually check everything. Your best bet is to always wear a e-condom (even outside of private servers) and get a free antivirus engine regardless of which it is.
Don't be ignorant and vulnerable. Malware is nothing new and a lot of the malware that you see spreading around today was actually created back in 2001. And if you're one of them people who complain about antivirus slowing your computer down then you have one of two options.
- Throw your p.o.s out the window and buy a new computer.
- Run a leight weight antivirus like Bitdefender or Panda.
That's Bitdefender free running on my machine eating only ~30 MB on average. If you run Windows 7 or later I would recommend shutting off Windows Defender and replacing that heavy/slow crap with one of the above free antivirus engines.
In Windows 7/8 you can disable it just by loading the UI for Windows Defender and navigating to.
Code:
Settings -> Administrator -> Turn on Windows Defender
Untick that box and hit
Save Changes. The UI will disappear and and you'll get a little error message alerting you that Windows Defender is disabled. With Windows 10 you can disable it through group policies.
Code:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Defender
From there you should see a setting titled
Turn off Windows Defender. Double click it and select
Enabled from the radio buttons at the top left of the new window. After a reboot Windows Defender should be disabled and you can check by checking your local services (the same with Windows 7/8).
There you have it, a little guide of what you should already know.
